BRYAN'S WORDS OF WISDOM.
Mr. Bryan's train hauled up at the
Tillage of Madeline, In Northern New
York, for the purpose of oiling the en
gine. This delay gave opportunity to
the candidate for the performance of
his usual act, and the depot loungers
were edified by the following deliver
ance from the rear platform:
say. Increase the demand for
liver by legislation, and that new de
mand, acting with the demand now in
existence, will operate upon the price
of silver. We say that the new demand
will be sufficient to consume all the sil
ver coined at the mints, and. being
sufficient, will raise the value of silver
bullion to $1. an ounce throughout the
world. We have a reason for our be
lief. They simply say it won't do, and
then sit back and propose absolutely
nothing."
Thus, It appears, the thing which Mr.
Bryan is striving for In this campaign
is an increase In the price of silver
bullion to J1.I9 per ounce. To produce
this result, he shows, it is only neces
sary to Increase the demand for silver
bullion; to increase that demand It is
only necessary to Increase the con
sumption of silver: to increase the con
sumption of silver It is only necessary
for this country to adopt a law pro
viding for the unlimited coinage of the
commodity of silver into United States
dollars free of charge. What a clear
and convincing reasoner Mr. Bryan
surely Is. How triumphantly he over
throws the gold bug objection to the
present coinage ratio of silver that it
is of uncertain value, and not the equal
In purchasing power with gold. A cer
tain lawyer objected to a ruling of the
late Chief Justice Carter, on the ground
that there was no law for It. "Then
I will make a law," was the answer of
the learned chief justice. And so it is
with Mr. Bryan. "You say." he says,
to the gold bug. "that silver is not
worth the present coinage ratio with
gold?" "Then I will make it so." "I
will make a law that it shall be worth
exactly J1.29 per ounce in gold no more
and no less." What a simple process.
and how the suggestion shows up the
strong and logical Intellect of Candi
date Bryan. It is true he doesn't ex
plain how the coinage of all these un
limited dollars would help the destitute
toilers of this powerful nation. It is
true that McKInley, In his letter of
acceptance, tries to make a point
against Mr. Bryan's beautiful free sil
Ter theory by warning the people that
they might have to work Just as hard
to get one of those Bryan dollars as
they used to have to work for the dol
lars of Harrison's administration. It is
true that McKInley attempts to fur
ther show the worklngman that when
he found somebody who has work for
him to do In exchange for one of these
new sliver dollars, he might find that
it was not the same dollar which he
received w hen Harrison was president, j
But then, that is a small natter. Let !
Mr. Bryan once demonstrate how sen
ator Stewart and the other silver min
ers can find a market a place of con
sumption, i. e.. the government mint
for their silver product, and then the
question of how other poor men are to
get the new free silver dollars will be
looked Into. Creat reforms move slow
ly. It Is too much to expect Mr. Bryan
to do everything at once. He got free
trade for the country at the last elec
tion. He expects to get free silver at
this, and then, perhaps, he will take up
this question of how people are to come
into possession of and use Mr. Stew
art's dollars during the next presiden
tial contest. Give Mr. Bryan time.
Give him time and rope, too, for that
matter. He will make it all right it

me rree coinage of silver was not
wanted by the producers of silver In
1S73, when Senators Stewart, Jones and
other blatant free silverltes demanded
that gold should be the standard of
value. They did it because the sliver
dollar was then worth more than the
gold dollar, and they could sell their
silver bullion for higher prices than
they could get for it In coin. When sil
ver declined in value because of Its
enormous production the silver produc
ers were the first to demand that the
government should coin their product
to Increase Its market value. To oblige
them the government coined over 33,

of 1S73, not one of w hich then circulat

they were worth J1.07 in gold; but they
