The correspondence below tells it own story. IVubtless the children will be given an enjoyable outing next Sat unlay. Gearhart Park. August :, 1S;5. Mr. A. R. Hammond: Dear Sir: We have a large batch of Eastern clams to arrive Friday, fo Saturday's "clam bake." As we have given several "clam hakes" tills season and the novelty Is worn off. I had a notion to give next Saturday's clam bake during the day time and make it for the school children of Astoria, New Astoria and Warren ton. If you will have your railroad to give these children an excursion down nex Saturday forenoon, returning In the af ternoon, at a rate so cheap that the poorest can come, then we will try to make the day pleasant for them and will give them the "clam bake." Should vou think favorably of this proposition, let me know by return mall. I think that the tickets and excursion can be handled through the director of the various schools without coat, and they should send along enough teachers to keep the children from harm. Very Kesiwvtfully, ALFRED KINNET Astoria, Or., August U, ISM. Hon. Alfred Kinney, Gearhart Pa--k. Oregon : My dear sir: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of this date, stu ing that you contemplate giving a clam bake to the school children of this city providing that our company make a low rale of fare to Gearhart and re turn. I desire to Inform you that the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad Company will be pleased to Join with you In giving the school children of this city the outing you propose, pro viding that after an Inspection of the rolling stock of this company, the di rectors of the schools and the parents and guardians of the children deem It wise to move so large a number of children with the class of equipment that Is at the disposal of the company at the present time. While we will be more than pleased to co-operate with you In the worthy undertaking propos ed, we do not care to assume the re sponsibility against accident. If the directors f the schools, pa rents and guardians of the children, after Inspection of the rolling stock, feel Justified In assuming the responsi bility, we w ill be pleased to place such equipment as we have at their dis posal, free of charge. The officers of this company will be pleased to confer with you, or other parties concerned in this matter, at ny time. Very sincerely, A. B. HAMMOND, President. ADVERTISED LETTERS.
