The Call. , , . . r - Attention la again drawn to the Im portanee of the Great Lake tralTlc by the opening of the new lock In the "Soo" canal at Fault Ste. Marie. This new lock has been about nine years In building, and costs the government about :.0C0.(K0. It has a length of S00 feet between gates, and a width of 100 feet, accommodating vessels that draw -1 feet of water. This outlet of Lake Superior passed last year 17.95 vessels, having a tonnage of 16,S9j.7Sl, compared with 3334 vessels, with a total tonnage of M4S.246. that passed through the famous Sues canal. Com merce apparently Just Mrs the outlay. And so doea the saving in freights; for It Is computed that, whereas in 1SS7 the average charge for the transportation of freight between the ports of Lake Superior and the lower lakes wag 2.3 mills per ton mile, lust year It was only .99 of a mill per ton tulle. In 1S59 It cost 11 cents to carry a ton of Iron ore from the mines of Lake Superior to the ports of Lake Erie. Now It costs M cents per ton. Iaiw freights i huve vintloulitedly helped to stlmulute the wonderful Iron production of the upper lake region, Just as tin open river at the tlulles and cuscudes of the Col umbia will help the fanners of the In land Empire.
