Dalles Team Viaaer of the Championship Cap Astoriaas Via Two rriics The Scores. The firemen's tournament came to a close yesterday, after two days of suc cessful sport. The weather was warm, very warm, and the crowd was some what larger than that of Friday. All day long the streets were crowflVl with a surging mass of humanity. The races took place on Commercial street, from Twelfth to the Astorian corner. The first race was the dry test In which were entered teams from The Dalles, Oregon City, Vancouver Bar ' racks, Portland and Astoria. The Dalles team was the first to run and made the distance in 46H seconds. As toria followed and made the winning run. The time of the local team was; 4554 seconds. The Portland team was; given no time, the boys having met with an accident. Oregon City made ! the distance in 46 seconds flat, win ring second money. The Vancouver team was looked upon by many as a sure winner, but the best they could do was to tie The Dalles' time. The first prize was 1100, and the second )0O. In the break and make coupling con test for a prize of J20 the entries were Reed and Lonsdale, of Astoria: Hen derson and Hamilton, of the Fourteenth Infantry, Vancouver; Burgy and Mc carty, of Vancouver; Hume and Jack son, and Bunner and Maloney, of Port land. The contest was won by Reed and Lonsdale, in l:26Vi. There were two entries In the tender race, Astoria No. 1 and Columbia No. 2. No. 1 won the race. The prizes were J20 and J10. The association championship, the principal event of the tournament, was run last. At 2 o'clock The Dalles team was sent away. They made a splendid run, the time being 1:23. Astoria fol lowed and made even a better run than the Upper Columbia boys. But the fickle goddess was fornlnst the local men and their hose became fouled. No time was given them. Had it not been for the accident the local team would have won easily. Oregon City got into the same box and the Judges announc ed no time. The Fourteenth Infantry's time was 1:26; Portland, 1:28'4 The Dalles boys won a prize worth contesting for 1150 and a solid silver championship cup. The latter they must win next year and the year after to become possessed of it. The Vancou ver boys got the second prize of $5j. And thus ended one of the moBt suc cessful tournaments ever held. There was a large attendance and everything passed off pleasantly. The local team is deserving.! great credit for the exhibi tions they put up, winning a majority of the races three first prizes and one second. OBJECT LESSON ON THE P. R. R. FUONTIER FORTIFICATIONS.
