An argument much used by the ad- vocat' a of free allver coinage is that If gold were demonetiied. as silver has been, that, too, would depreciate In ralue. aa silver has done. They say that ire coinage and the lejtal tender Quality give it a proportion of its value, and onsequentIy if It is deprived of these It cannot be so useful nor so val uable. The conclusion from this argument is that :'. is because free eolnase and the legal tender quality have been taken from silver that the latter metal has o (nvjtly depreciated In value. Silver, they :ay, has been wickedly and crim inally demonetised and thus robbed of Its ur 'fulness and a large part of Its value. Had gold t-en treated In the same way It would have suffered In the same way. The assumption Is not true. Gold needs neither a government stamp nor a gOTrnment law to make It pass cur rent the world over. Wherever marts f co nmeree exist, wherever men are engaged in the business of exchanging services or commodities. In barbarous as well as In clviliied lands, there gold no matter w hat its form. If only it can be handled, will effect these exchanges It may have to be tested or weighed by the parties themselves, but It needs do law to make it pass current when Its weight and flneneis have been as certained , and that It la all the govern ment stamp does. So long as gold is an object of desire among men, so long will it be used as money. The early California times fully illus trate this. Gold dust passed current there in the early fifties, and it was declared at a public meeting in San Fran isco that an ounce of gold dust shoo! 1 be valued at IIS. Eel re the government mint was es tabifcslee' private coiners of gold issued coins for convenience, and these passed current among the people. It is said that yo.000.000 of private coins were strict off between the years 1.0 and 1S54, -vhen the government mint cum tpenc -d operations, and certain of these C4fns struck off by Moffat & Co.. con tinue to circulate even after that be cause the people had confidence In them. Thu It required neither a govern ment stamp nor the legal tender qual ity tc make these coins circulate. Ths: the legal tender quality a Ids no value fs evident from the fact that cur gold coin fs shiped abroad to pay our balances, interchangeably with gold bars. In the Bank of England today there !s said to be a very large amount of Am erican gold coin held on deposit. It is not legal tender anywhere except In the United States, but it Is worth Just ( s much abroad as it is here be cause It is taken by weight, while the stamp certifies to its fineness. The large use of gold bars in our foreIf..i commerce also proves that coin age i- not essential to the usefulness or ve ue of sold ar.J that it passes in one firm, quite ?s r-ad:!;- as In the; other- I AH :61s demonstrates that it is idle to tal": of demonetization of gold. No matter what the laws might declare, it wt jld still be the money of the world. It cannot be demonetized. Timet Herald. The general disposition of the Bryan campaigners is to overlook all the years of prosperity that the country had f:Om 1879, when specie payments were resumed, to 150, when the .Sher man silver act was passed, and to con sider nly the later years of hard tiin. s, which they ascribe to the d'-mon-tlza-tion f f silver In 1S73. Obviously, If any Inference at all Is to be drawn from that ret, it is fair to say the years of prosperity are due to it rather than the years of adversity, since they are nearer to It in point of time. Mr. J. Selwln Tait, in one of his "Plain Talks on Money Matters," takes occasion to snow mar. me price or wheat was maintained at the average of 71.5 cents (goldj per bushel on the farm from 1SC2 to 1S&0, and that it is only since the last named year that a serious decline has taken place. The figures are found In Senate Document No. 306 of the pres ent congress, and are obtained from the returns to the agricultural department from the four states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Nebraska. The varia tions In price were very slight for twenty-eight years, beginning with 1SC2 and ending In 1890, the highest price on the farm being 86 cents, and the to west being 71 In 1890 the price stropped to 59 and has averaged 59.3 since.
