Local Tern Voa the Vet Test by XI most i i Secoid tad Lost the Speed Race by Ahoat t Foot Events Today. The annual firemen's tournament opened In this city yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired. The crowd was much larger than that of any former day of regatta week and ihe streets were packed all day long. The races took place on Commercial street, the course being from 12th street west to Astorlan corner. The first race scheduled was the hand engine contest, the prize being $100. As no entries were made, the race was declared off. At 11 a. m. the wet test hose race was run, with $100 for the first prize and $50 for the second. Entered were The Dalles; 14th Infantry, Vancouver Barracks; Liberty, of Portland; Ore gon City, and Astoria teams. The Dalles was the first to run. The boys put up a pretty race, but the man at the hydrant was took quick with the water, and the nozzle could not be placed on the hose In time. The result settled all chances for The Dallea boy for the race. Then the Astoria team was sent to the mark. The starter failed to send the local boys boys away In shape, and nearly every man In the team went to his knees. Despite this drawback they made an excellent run and good connection, getting water In 49 seconds flat. Vancouver was next and the soldiers came down the line like a streak, the crowd setting up a great cheer. They got water In exactly 49 seconds. The Liberty team, of Portland, was the next to get away, and made a fine run. Their time, also, was 49 seconds. The last team to run was that of Ore gon City. The boys started finely and the expression, "They'll settle that tie!" was heard on all sides. But their wa ter was slow, and the connections poor. The time was KHseconds. The tie between Astoria, Vancouver and Portland was run off at 6 p. m. As toria ran first and the boys came down the track like they were trying to win. Their run was the neatest of the day and their connections could not have been better. When the judges an nounced the time as 4SH seconds the crowd went wild. Vancouver ran next and made It in 49!, while Portland's time was 50S. Thus, Astoria carried off the first prize of $100, while Vancouver took second place, with a prize of $50. The local boys ran a great race and are de serving of great credit. THE SPEED RACE. The speed race took place on Duane l street at 2 p. m. Owing to the num i ber of entries, the event was run In heats. Vancouver and The Dalles run ning first. It was anybody's victory till within a few yards of the finish, one team being ahead for a distance and then the other taking the lead. To ward the last Vancouver spurted past The Dalles boys and won the heat by a scratch In 32 seconds. The event caused great excitement. In the second heat were Astoria, Portland and Oregon City. Astoria took the lead at the start and steadily widened the gap. finishing about 13 feet ahead in the good time of 31"i seconds for the 26S yards. Portland got second place by a foot. In the final heat there was great excitement. The teams got a fine start and they came down the line hub and hub. About half way Astoria got a slight lead and widened it to a foot, running In that position until within 30 feet of the finish, when Vancouver caught up. Side by side they ran until within five feet of the line, when the men running behind the Vancouver cart, with a mighty push, sent It over a foot ahead of the Astoria boys. For some time the crowd was in doubt as to the winners, but when the Vancouver boys threw their hats In the air and yelled, it became known that the first prize of $75 was theirs. Astoria got the second prize of $25. The time given was 31"i seconds. So far the tournament has been a great success. But little kicking Is be ing done, and the best of feeling pre vails. Astoria and Vancouver have all the money thus far, but the races to day will probably divide the cash. The principal event of today is the championship hose race. The first prize Is $150 and the second $50. A championship cup has been offered for the winner of the first prize. It Is the property of the team that can win the race this year and successfully defend It tor the two following years; or the team that can hold It three years. The other events today are the dry test, prizes $100 and $50; tender race, prizes $20 and $10; break and coupling contest, prize $20. NEW PROPOSITION. Big Insurance Company Makes a Good Offer.
