THE BIKE PARADE
Grand Turn-out by AH of the Wheels
in the City.
One of the Most Bcaatifil Cveits of Re
gatta Vets .Hiss .Maud Stocktoi
aid 0. Small Via.
Promptly at 7:30 last evening;, the
bicycle parade formed at the cyclery
and wheeled through the city over the
course laid down. After the regular
line of march was finished, a number
of new courses were made and the
Jolly wheelers circulated up and down
the streets during the greater part of
the evening.
The procession was headed by the
tandem, which was very handsomely
decorated, and one of the most con
spicuous wheels tn the procession. The
ladles Immediately followed the tan
dem, and the rest of the procession
was made up of men and boys on
wheels of every description most fan
tastically decorated. To say that the
display was a brilliant one, and the
most successful of the kind ever seen
In the city, scarcely expresses the
truth. To give a detailed description
of each wheel would be Impossible.
Many of the designs were odd and
many of them were most beautiful.
Chinese lanterns, umbrellas, banners,
of every site and description, made
the swiftly passing procession one long
streak of light, color and fantastic
shapes. Cow bells, fire gongs, calliopes
and other devices, furnished the neces
sary noise.
Mr. O. Small, of the can factory, was
the winner of the gentlemen's prize,
and Miss Maud Stockton carried off
the lady's pennant. It is safe to say
that at the next regatta the cyclists
will be called upon to take a prominent
part.
CHINESE AMBASSADOR.
Washington, August 19. President
Cleveland has officially Indicated that
Earl LI Hung Chang will be the guest
of the nation during his forthcoming
visit to this country, and General Rug
gles, stationed at Governor's Island,
has been designated to take charge
of the details of the reception. The
Chinese minister returned from New
York today after seeing General Rug
gles and ex-Secretary Foster. Thus far
it Is settled only that the president's
reception of LI will occur In New York.
As a result there is some doubt wheth
er the Chinese ambassador will visit
Washington at all.
The proposed visit of Earl LI to Bos
ton has been abandoned, although the
present plan is to extend the stay In
New york because of the president's
presence there, and shorten It else
where.
