Xi .ne of Mr. Hrvnn's "smart" say Inr a ms to tickle him more than h s assert n that the Kepuhllean platform admits that the gold standard Is a bad thing, but affirms that we must cling to it until foreign nations consent to Join I.', an International agreement for sliver lOinage. He repeats It again and agnin. and proudly declares that It ill. by dii t of reiteration, "drive the He public, n party fnm the field." Just ke,-p on asking your Republican friend', he says, why they want frve eoinaj. by International agreement if the gv d standard Is a good thing, and you 111 shut their mouths. Terhaps you ill. if you can rtrst induce them to shvt their eyes and not read their ewn j 'at form. Hut If they do read it. they nil! not be long In seeins how mis leadin: and dishonest Is the Interpre tation w hich Mr. Kryan puts up. n it. The Republican money plaak begins ty sa; ing that since resumption every dollar has been as good as gold. Then It declare unalterable opposition to "every measure calculated to debase ur currency or impair the credit of our country." That is to say. having r.iade every dollar as good as gold, the plat form propose to keep it so. It is therefore, it goes on. "opposed to the free coinage of silver." It is opposed to it because it would debase the cur rency, impair the credit of the country and fail to keep every dollar as good as gold. If free coinage Is to be had In such a nay that these bad results will not follow from it. it Is to be had the platform continues, only by "inter national agreement with the leading commercial nations of the world." If such agreement would not debase our currency cr impair our credit, then the platform Isor it. but otherwise, and till U.en. "the existing gold standard must ! e preserved." and the obligations of the Cnlted States must be maintain ed "Ir. violate." Her. is no shamefaced shuffling about the gold standard, as Mr. Bryan insinuates. The emphasis throughout is on iiold as the best currency and the true neasure of private and public credit. There Is no apologetic or halt ing u.e of the word gold: it occurs three times in the plank, and each time is ma !e to stand for the best money and fie only standard, being that of "the riost enlightened nations of the earth."" If Mr. Bryan is really opposed to tha plank, then he declares himself. In the act. in favor of a debas-d cur rency, of impaired national credit of havinr dollars not as good as gold dollar;', and of allowing the obliga tions of the United States to be vio lated. He Is enough of a logician to know that th se propositions are the only r;rict contradictories of the ones he as.ills. We are not set for the defence of International bimetallism. Our fe?t have not been taken in that snare. But tViere are intellisent and International bim.-tallists. like Sent A "alker, who have a dignif. vd answer t j M.. )!r..,'s boy" e.-jestion. If bimetallism is a good thing, why not have It yourselves out of hard? Becauae, Boy Orat r, it is one of those many cud things which you. cxnnot have without the cej-opera-tlon of other countries. Why must we have international copyright. Interna tional sanitary regulations, an int-rna-tlonal code of signals and rules of the road ft sea, International puiilic and prlvat ; law, and so on? Be. ause one natioc alone, one nation in reekless de fiance of others, can have none of these i:ood things. If marine signals are a good thing, Mr. Bryan's boy logic v ould say, w hy not set up a code of your own without waiting for the "consent" of other countries? Are not 70,00),C 0 of people able to lay down their c.vn rules of the road at sra? Ail that h- necessary for the international bimetEllist to do In order to ( lap an extinguisher on Mr. Bryan's chapter is to sho.v, as he easily can, that free coinage by this country alone would be as disastrous as free sailing of the seas In disregard of International ruieB would be. The real opinion of real International bimetallists has already been declared by President Walker and others to be that the Bryan go-it-alone plan has thrown all the fat In the fire and set back the bimetallic cause indefinitely. t t. th. r they Ilk-' it : v : .i ot in ,m- ...us oe: .- , than i wai't to make fools 't'.s' c . ss, -"e :'S- r.t" to -.; w :tii Individual : r -letters n-.ei ' .
