The newly elected fish commissioner
of the United States cannot be too
highly commended for the action he is
taking in regard to the propagation of
salmon In the Columbia river. Two or
three months ago he sent Special Agent
Wilcox here, who made a careful ex
amination of the situation here and
forwarded to Washington an elaBorate
report. Upon receipt of this report,
the commissioner telegraphed M. J.
encourage the work at every turn and
Insist upon their congressmen lending
every possible aid at the national cap
ital. If the subject Is dropped or pass
ed over casually, it will certainly be
one of the greatest mistakes ever made
in this city. N'ot only those who are
engaged In the fishing business, but
every merchant and business mn
should put his shoulder to the wheel
and render every service now that the
best opportunity presented in twenty
years is at hand. Strike while the Iron
is hot, and success will surely come.

If the fish commissioner energetically
pursues the course which he has out
lined, the benefits to Astoria and the
Columbia river cannot be measured.
The future wealth and growth of the
city will more than be doubled, and the
value to the community at large will
be almost equal to that of the railroad.
Dr. Cox stated when here that the
commissioner was determined to re
stock the Columbia river with one
hundred million fish every year. In
Tiew of all these facts It certainly be
hooves the people of Astoria and Oregon
to supplement the work of the commis
sioner In every possible manner and as
sist him In a practical way to secure
the most eligible sites for hatcheries.
Let this work be carried on carefully
and on scientific principles, and In ten
years' time Astoria's population will
number 25,000 people as a result of the
fishing business alone. Astorlans should

The road Is very good except in spots,
where the late rains have made a few
bad mud holes. Just here I would sug
gest that our county should take over
the toll road and make It a free road.
The settlers at and below Elk Creek
are entitled to a free road. Coming
straight along by Elk Creek we hoped
to reach Hugg Point in time to drive
around, but the tide was too fast for
use and we left our buggy near an
other Just north of the point and came
over a good trail half a mile to the
Austin House. Here we found Mr.
Ward Sr., his son Ben and wife, with
Mr. and Mrs. Wlngate. They had only
arrived an hour ahead of us and were
equally Impressed as ourselves, with
the beauty of the drive from Seaside
and the many grand pictures along the
beach drive below Elk Creek. Indeed

It is probable, also, that a detail of
troops from Governor's Island will take
part In the reception at New York and
that a troop of cavalry from Fort Myer
will assist In the exercises here.
