How the People Spend Their Time at the lleaches. Sunday at Clatsop beach waa one of the first beautiful days since, the re cent rainy season, the weather was Just right neither too warm or too cool, and the hundreds of visitors en Joyed every moment of the day and evening. Campers und hotel boarders were out In full force, while the crowd of transient visitors lined every bench. ,M the bathing hour n large number were In the surf, and the different pic turesque costumes lent additional gai ety to the scene. Among ull the resorts on the south side, perhaps C.euihurt Park takes the lead. It Is pre-eminently a phiee for fumilles to spend the slimmer. The hotel Itself is situated lit the edge of a imignlllccnt woods, sheltered from the wind, and surroundid In every direction by beautiful lawns nnd flower gardens. The house Is commodious, the rooms .iiifortable, and the cuisine 'unexcelled. This season, under the management of Mr. W. H. llarmore, ably seconded by Steward AV. 0. Ray, and Chef Chillies Nneve, the house has never before been so attractive. The rates are most rea sonable ntid one must be fustldioiiB In deed If he cannot be sntlslled here. All of the adjoining cottnges in the grove are occupied, and numbers ot tents are pitched here ond there. The walk to the bench Is but a short one, and the- life lines and new bathing houses make surf bathing not only a pleasant but an absolutely safe pastime. It Is certain that with the prediction of hot weather In the Interior, and continued pleasant days on the bench, hundreds of others will seek the shores of Clatsop county for recreation. Wednesday evening Manager Bar- more gave a muslcale at the hotel to which all the residents of the park were Invited. The house was beautiful ly decorated and Illuminated for the occasion. Mr. TV. J. Clemens, of Tort- gettlng up a game. It is said that the Examiners can play better bail than any other nine in the county, as has been demonstrated, and, as the Mono. grams are rrack-n-Jncks, the game would be un Interesting one. It Is also stated that It could be mnde to pay expenses equally as well as the football games which have been played ot Smith's Point. A great many peo ple would rather see a game of ball than almost anything else, and It seems to be the genera! opinion that a ball game would be a drawing card. All admirers of the game are anxious to have the committee offer a prize which w ould be large enough to pay the Port- hind team's expenses. The Astoria team wns recently defeated by the Monograms In Portland, but still think they can pluy better ball than their antagonists!. By proper training they could put themselves in good shape by August 20. nth ilmlli UgUIBN OABTOrtIA, rfpo TEACHERS' EXAMINATION.
