A decided change for the better Is noticeable amongst business men of the city. While everybody has been hard up and money has not become very much easier Just yet, still all are hopeful and there Is a general feel ing that better times are at hand. When those who have cause to have the blu-s exhibit cheerfulness and keep a stiff upper lip, half the battle of bringing back good times has been won. For the first time In many seasons the canneries during the last few days have been obliged to limit their boats and part of the time some of them have been able to take no fish at all. One trap In one haul took In five tons of salmon on Desdemona sands the other day. In the early part of the season steamers were bringing the sur plus fish from the up-river canneries, while now the decks of every out-going boat are plied with the surplus fish from Astoria canneries. It was rumored yesterday that dur ing the blockade of fish at the canner ies, many salmon were offered at one cent per pound. A visitor in the city yesterday remarked that It seemed a shame that at such times as these HERE ARE BARGAINS ' more salmon could not be salted, as I It brings a ready sale In many parts I of the country. It was explained, how ' ever, that while it was true that dur ing the past day or two many tlsh have been wasted, yet the present run , of salmon Is one the like of which has not been seen here In fifteen years. About the only cases now In the po lice court are those of drunkenness, fighting and disorderly conduct, the lines for which run from Ave to ten dollars. A wag suggested yesterday that Judge Nelson supply himself with I a book of certificates or coupons which might bi Issued at wholesale rates to ! parties In the habit of Indulging In such escapades, and that when a man was arrested, instead of going through with the trouble and formality of a trial, the only thing necessary to be done would be for the police officer to ! collect a coupon from the offender and let him go. The city would get a great ileal of money in advance which might otherwise be spent for drink, and the man himself would not have so much money to waste. PERSONAL. Mr. D.
