There Is much besides the Action, however, to Interest one In the August McClure's. William T. Stead, whose personal studies of eminent men are always written with the utmost thor oughness and skill, describes the course of life by virtue of which Mr. Gladstone now, at eighty-six, serenely pursues his favorite studies In the full strength, ot all his faculties. The gift of a good strong mind and body require at least 1:0,000 men at work j from nature, la by no means the whole and 120.000 In reserve, and theae It would be Impossible to accommodate upon a ship of such slxe. Even if It were possible to carry this number of men In such a vessel, by no conceiv able means could their power be utilis ed so as to Impart to It a leed or twenty knots an hour. This Illustrates how a prime mover may not only a mete substitute for muscular work, but may afford the means of attaining kn end that could not by any possi bility be attained by muscular exer tion, no matter what money was ex pended or what galley slave suffering was Indicted. Oovraaflt Report EDCCATKD HOUSES.. An entertainment outside the usual order of theatrical affairs will be given In the Opera House today and tomor row evenings, July 29 and 30, when Prof. Itrlatol's famous school of edu cated horses appear. These wonderful animals have met with great popular success for several years in all the large cities of the East, this being their first visit to Oregon, where they no doubt they will be accorded general favor. They do not perform the usual tricks done by horses in a circus ring, but are taught feats never before at tempted, which they accomplish with astonishing perfection. There will be a mutlnc session Thursday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, when all the little chil dren are given a pony ride. The San Francisco Examiner of April 28th, says: 'One of the most remarkable performances ever witnessed In this city was that of Professor D. M. Hrls- tol's trained horses at the Auditorium Inst evening. The animals are trained to a wonderful degree of perfection and one almost expects to hear them nlk. They play at school, put up Jokes on the teacher, carry chairs rn tables, dunce, do penunce for Infrac tion of school rules, tell the time of night ami answer problems lit arith metic given by tho audience. Some very Interesting re cent portraits accompany the paper. A paper on Abraham Lincoln's more Important law case will be a revela tion to most readers. It tells the story of these cases, which is In each In- i stance very entertaining, and shows that very early Lincoln as a lawyer was entrusted with most Important Interests. Incidentally, the true story Is told for the first time of Lincoln's first meeting with Stanton. Elisabeth Stuart Phelps gives Inter. estlng reminiscences of the literary Boston of some years back; and Mr. Low, In a beautifully illustrated arti cle, writes of the contemporary Italian painters.
