In the history of the Hebrew nice w ciinatutitly read wonderful account of visions. The prophet were In vry frequent roinmiiiilrallon with heavon, and tho revelations which mine to them were received by the people In perfect f.illh and made the bl of their private live as well a of their national policy, No embarrassment ever ocurreil In which they did not look for divine guidance and protec tion. The page of the Old Tesllment ure so III I .! with thes thing that If you were to eliminate them a Incred ible there would tie almost nothing of spiritual value Ivft. The Gospels and the Epistles Inherit the same peculiarity. Christ absolute ly depended upoir the angel for slrer.gth to perforin III mission. lie could get no sympathy from men, for thrlr relation to 1 Urn was one of con tinuous misunderstanding. The truth he announced r but poorly compre hended at even this lata day, though threaj time eighteen generation have pondered and tried to explain them. The little we ran catch a glimpse of has given us the chief elements of our civilisation, but the profound depth of HI phllosnphy of life have never been fathomed except by the rare few. He was the most alone being that ever lived, 'and He would certainly have sunk under the burden Imposed hud It not been for the companionship of those who wslk the earth unseen. I have always hud a feeling that we do not make as much practical use of heaven a Uod would like to have u do. The religious life Include a great many personal experience which the nominal Christian knows nothing about. These experience are deep, helpful, wonderful and ennobling. They are the ripened fruit of truo re ligion, and we ought not to he satla 8ed until we have enjoyed some of them. If there I a Uod at all. It I cer tainly among our possibilities to bold such relations with Him that these poor lives may be literally flooded with light A Uod hidden from the oul' sight, enfolded In such obscurity that we can have no contact with Him, can hardly expect u to love Him very profoundly. Love I born of knowl edge and It I strongest when the knowledge Is the result of Intimacy. So long a Ood I at a distance, a dis tance so great that our crtea may nev er compass It, so long He I to a large extent mythical, and what we call our duties are perfunctorily performed. If a friend sits at our side and give us dally advice, I a part of our plana. Is a treasury of strength from which to draw, that I one thing; but If he live In the planet Mar and haa very little to do with ua. that I a very dlfflerent thing. Too many people' Ood I at the other end of the universe, and they have such slender acquaintance with him that they sometimes wonder If they will ever get any nearer. The Christ, on the contrary, received con stant visit from New Jerusalem. The grand reality was not here, but there, and there Is no reason why w should not, a HI heir, occupy the same vantage ground and enjoy the same privileges. He not only came to tell u what to do, but how It can best be done, and I am bold to assert on the authority of HI own word, that a an earthly father ahon himself to hi children so the Heavenly Father will make Himself manifest to us, if the right conditions prevail. In a way which cannot be misunderstood. There will be no miracle In connection with It, neither will It be In any sense su pernatural, for it will be the most nat ural thing In the world. I can't con ceive how Cod could have created mankind and made us dependent upon Him, as we are, without having at the same time furnished means of con slant communication. No one can vlv. Idly believe In Cod without a strong feeling that He Is near at hand, and that If we free the oul from the blind ing entanglement cf material thing It will be conscious of His presence. Just as we are conscious of the all-enfold- lug SllllllKht. And, moreover. If we believe In hea ven In the lusting bonds of love, and that the dear one yonder arc concern ed for us, are Interested In our well being, then It must needs follow as the day the night that the door through which they went has not been and will not be bolted agalnrt their return. Think of a heaven in which a mother Is ntlll anxious to do what she mny for her wayward child, hut Is forbidden! And think of a Ood of In finite wisdom and love and pity who has been at so much pains I say It reverently at so much pains to per suade am". Induce Ills children to lead holy lives, think of Ills forbidding our dear ones to come near us. nnd order ing them to shut their eyes against our welfare and check their solicitude! No; what the prophets of old saw we could see, If the right frame of mind prevailed. Ood had methods by which Ho gnade Himself known to them, and the same methods may be applied to us. There are visions and Impressions and subtle Influences In these latter days, and the man who open hi aoul to them will enjoy mar vellous experiences. Religion consists of a belief that Ood Is always nigh and that angel are bearing us up lest we stumble. Until we realise these things our life will lack the most Important Ingredient of human happiness. , GEORGE H. HEPWORTH. OUTWARD BOUND OREGON GRAIN FLEET-1805-C. The U. S.
