The report of tlm committee on Inter stale and forelxn commerce to the hoimo of reprsi'iilatlvea, recommending the financial aid of the government In (he completion of the Nicaragua Canal, has ben Issued from the gov ernment printing oltlce. It I a mot able document, and commends Itself to the' hearty approbation of all friend of the great enterprise, as a pertinent and unprejudiced discussion of th en tire aulij.-ct, Its conclusion, which we quote. Is brief, pertinent, and satisfac tory i The board of engineers have staled 111 their depositions, before the Inter state commerce committee, (hat llli-y believe tint Nicaragua canal la enllre'y feasible, and when completed will I practicable for commercial purposes, but (hey ulfTer with the engineer of Hie company as to the probable cot of the work. As we have already stat ed, the advantages to be derived from the c-iiiKtiuctli.il of Hits great Inter oceanic waterway are mi vast that n believe the (anal should b built, even thounh the ri.si of i-onntructlon exceed the figures of the board of engineers. In our opinion the government should uSNlst the company In the completion of the work, even If II cos(s over IIM, ooo.O'Xi; but If. as we believe. It tan l constructed for about SlM.O'iQ.O'M, so much the better. The cam. I should be built aa a matter of national need. The difference of opinion existing be tween the board of engineers and the engineer of the company doe not In any way affect the feasibility or prac ticability of the canal, nor In any way lessen Its Importance to the I'nlted States. From all the evidence submitted to the committee, It Is evident that the canal la a perfectly feasible project, t'nder those circumstance we feel Jus tified In recommi ndlng that congress should take Immediate action to give auch aid to the enterprise aa may be necessary to obtain the funda which are requisite to complete th work al ready commenced. As we have already stated, the advantages to be derived by the I'nlted State by such co -operation are untold, wherea th risk U practically nothing. It Is the opinion of the committee that a commanding sense of patriotic duty to our whole country demanda that the government of the I'pited State give such aid to tha enterprise a lll assure It speedy and economi cal construction. It Is no longer a question as to whether the canal will be built or not, but a to who shall build It and who shall control It when built. The feasibility of th proposed Interoreaiilc waterway has been fully demonstrated, and Its Importance and advantage to commerce have never been seriously questioned.. Its consum mation Is Inevitable, for Its necessity Is present and Imperative, and when completed. It will Insure the safety and prosperity of the Interests and Indus tries of the American )eople. Hon. William II. Doollttle, of Taeo ma. Wash., who haa always been a warm advocate of the canal, has been a most active and vfllclent member of the sub-committee, to which considera tion of matters concerning the canal was ref rred by the house. Ills sense of the Importance of the canal to the country at large and especially to the future development and prosperity ot his own, and of the other state of the Puciflc coast, has made Mm continual ly xealoua In advancing the business of tho sub-conimlttce and eventually In securing the report by the full com nilttce of a bill, by which provision Is made for rartylng the recommenda tion of the report Into effect In a man ner that should he satisfactory to the promoter of the enterprise. The select committee of the senate on the construction of the Nicaragua canal, of which Hon. John T. Morgan Is chairman, has submitted the same bill, with an equally able and favora ble report, unanimously to the senate. It Is now to be hoped that. In "a commanding sense of patriotic duty to our whole country," the Fifty-fourth congress will consummate In Its sec ond session what has been so well be gun In Its lust.
