and she was launched at Illuckwell,
EiiKlund, a few weeks ago.
Her name I that of the inatchleaa
sacred mountain about seventy or eigh
ty miles from Yokohama, whoso snow-
1 appeil peak can oe seen from the deck
of an Incoming vessel fifty miles or
more off the const, The Inline I Inter
preted by the Japanese as "The t'n-
equalled, ' and that Is what the new
battleship I expected to be.
The Fujiyama Is a vensel of the type
of the Koyal Hovvrelicn. of the Hrltlsh
navy, and she has a displacement of
12.4M tons. Is 4"Q feet In length, 73 feet
beam, and 26', f.-et draught. She la
one of two vessels ordered In England
several months before the opening of
hostilities between Japan and China.
She Is built upon design drawn by
O. C. Mackrow, an English naval ar
chitect. In accordance with the view
of a commission presided over by Cap
tain Yendo, the Japanese naval at
tache In London. Her construction has
been under the superintendence of Cap
tain Yendo, Takayama, and niiyahara,
and Lieutenant Kltakoga. all officer of
the Japanese navy.
Th recent Japan-China war suggest
ed some Improvement In this new bat
tlejhlp, especially to give further pro
tection from the disastrous effects of

haa been substituted for wood wher
ever It was possible; the seamen' mess
shelves and captain' cabin, the ward
room and other fittings, and tha bulk
head In the offlcer'a quarter are, ac
cordingly, of steel or compoltlon. The

of the vessel, and Is 18 Inches thick
abreast of the machinery and boilers,
and 14 Inches thick at the ends.
This armor, which Is of the Harvey
lied process of hardening, weighs 1600
tons, and aome of the plates weigh tS
tons, and cost 114. each. The total
weight of the hull, aa she lay on the
waya. was 730 tons. The armor deck,
extending from stem to stern. Is
Inches thick, and terminates Id a pow
erful ram. There are two military
top masts, each with double tops, with
derricks for lifting the boats. She will'
carry thirteen boats of various types.
Including two vldette torpedo boat 64
feet In length. The conning tower la
constructed of steel plate 14 Inche
thick; then there Is a director tower
aft of S-lnch steel plates.
The engine are of th triple-expan
sion type, of 14.000 horse-power, calcu
lated to give a speed, with her twin
screws, of IS knots. The boilers are of
the usual cylindrical type.
The urmument of this great ship will
consist of four 12-Inch breech-Ioadlnar
rifles, mounted In pairs In two bar
bettes pluted with lt-lnch stool armor;
10 6-Inch rupld-tlrliig guns, mounted
In casements; 10 3-pounder and four
2Hi pounder Hotchkls 1 upld-tlrliig guns,
and live torpedo launching tube one
above and four below tho water line.
There will be a complete system of Im
ternal electric lighting, and live pow.
