Rullway Ag. Writing to the Yale Itevlew, Profes sor A. T. lladley says: "Many an ad voctte of canal projects claims that a canal Is a cheaper meant of transpor tation than a rullroad. If w compare the expense of railway transportation. Including Interest and maintenance, with the expense ot canal transporta tion, not Including Interest and mainte nance, this Is sometimes so. The reason that the comparison la made In this fashion Is because the government habitually pays Interest and mainte nance on the canal, to that thla I supposed to be no part of the expense lo the shlper. Hut It represent a cot to the public Just as much as If It were paid by private Individual, and any Irglslatlon which Ignore this element of cost Is blindly Increasing public burdens." This I a point which the Railway Age ha Insisted on' more than once, and following the argument step fur ther we come to this dilemma: Count- ng the cost of construction (or Inter est) and maintenance, which In the case of waterway are paid by the government out of money raised from taxation.- the people of the United Plate pay more for each ton of good shipped by water than they do for each tn ahlpied by rail. To the peo ple as a whole water transportation is the more expensive. Either the Indi vidual shipper pays the greater cost or he dm-s not. If the whole people is equally Interested In water transporta tion, then be does. In which case he I a fool to use It. and the canals are a burden to him. If the whole people Is not equally Interested, then the multi tude are being taxed for the benefit of the few; which Is grossly wrongful and unjust. Children Cry for Pitcher's Castorla. OCR CORNER. ' AgttrU far U United Matat, JOHN DUNCAN'S SONS. N. V In Medieval Days When peoplt wanted anything tnry knelt down and prayed for IL How ever, that was some time ago. Along about 1j0 a fellow named Guten berg, who hod "come de Rhine over," was monkeying around a carpenter shop In Lenta. Ht whit tled some Utile blocks and actually made an alphabet. Then he rigged a sort of well, a machine that would look something like our let ter press of today. He arranged his blocks In order, put some Ink on them, also a piece of paper, and then screwed bis press down. That was called priming. Old Uutenberg made a howling success of the rocket, and his head became so swollen that he really snubbed the king one day. The king overlooked It. however, for he had an Idea what kind of fellows primers would be. Well, ruully they got the print ing system down pat, and, aa the centuries rolled by, begun printing newiapers first person. Invariably slngulur number, any gender and hard case. In This Enlightened Day There are many newspapersas a matter of fact. But It Is an utter Impossibility to get a newspaper to admit It. The advertising patronage ot a newspaper depends largely yea, wholly upon ita circulation. A newspaper Is a great deal like the human body: it its circulation is good, it prospers: otherwise, otherwise. Some papers publUh Want Columns That Is, a column, or a number of columns, devoted to small advertise ments. If a fellow wants anything trouble, a wife, a house don't make any difference what It Is he can get It by means ot a. email ad. Included in the "v'r.t" column ore "For 8ule," "For Rent." -Lost," "Found." "Stolen" and "Miscel laneous." Now, Just see what chunipa some people are! Why, a man has been known to hunt over a city thla city for days looking for a house In which to live. Hod he come to The Astorlan offlca and asked for a want ad. he could have gotten his house without the least bit of trouble and tor about 2& cento. It Is Needless To tell ot The Astorlan' circula tion. The paper has been estab lished for. a quarter ot a century. Why, old Concomly read the first rumor of the building of a railroad to his braves from lu Circulation la The Astorlan' long suit. Conse quently, when a fellow comes into The Astorlan office, looks pleasant, throws down 2S cents on the coun ter and says he wants a house, be gets It ! Why, Just Think I The Astorlan goes Into every house In Astoria and a great majority ot those in the surrounding sections of Oregon and Washington. Hence, It you Insert an ad. in The Astorlan, It Is equivalent to engaging a man to go around to all those houses and telling the Inmates that you wont something or have something for sale. Why, talk about a snap! A Bit of Advice When you want anything no mat ter what It Is when you have any thing for sale; when you lose, rind or steal anything, oome around and tell your trouble to The Astorlan. Bring 25 cents with you, and, above all things, look pleasant. Tell the clerk that you want a wnt ad. in the want column, give hlii your 6 cents and go away happy.
