Captain Knowleh sail ed In thu ahlp Wild Wave, from Han Francisco, with a crew of 30, and ten pnaaenger. The voyage was an une ventful one until March 6. when the ahlp went on a rural reef off Oeno In land. The vraal waa sailing I knots an hour when 'breakers' were reported, but the warning came too late, and she went head on. The ship as de cried and the land made by the ship wrecked mariners. A few days later Captain Know lea with five others took one of the ship's boats and started for I'ltcalrn Island, ninety miles south of the reef where the ship had struck, teaching that Island, the captain found that It had been deserted, and that the Inhabitants had left for Nor folk Island. While at Pltcalrn's the boat In which the tittle crew had land ed was smashed, and being fortunate In finding a number of tools left by the former Inhabitants of the Island, Captain Knowles and the' five men with him built a small vessel Bhe waa 30 feet long. I feet wide and 4 feet deep. Bhe was schooner-rigged, and was a very crude affair, being made from timber hewn on the Island and such lumber aa could be found. The uae of a aaw was very much In evi dence, but there wasn't one on the la land, and they had lo resort to the ue of the axe. In this little craft Captain Knowles reached Nukallma, one of the Marqucaaa group. There he found the 1'nttcd States aloop-of-war Vandalla. and In her proceeded to Ta hiti, thence to Honolulu, and from that place to Han Franclaco, where his frlenda had given him up for dead."
