Gilbert the well known banker, of Salem; A. G. Philips, August Hlld- Ing, Portland, and W. D. O'Connor, were at the Parker yesterday. Mr. J. B. Kellogg arrived yesterday from Seaside on his way to Portland and reports that business Is already quite lively at the various resorts. Hanthorn's launch, Ida Hazel, was busy half the night Tuesday in towing great logs away from the cannery which had drifted down the river. The beautiful day yesterday tempted many out upon the waters. Nearly all of the boats were engaged, and much pleasure was reported by various par ties. Mr. Homer Fletcher returned from an extended visit to San Diego, Cat. His arrival is opportune, inasmuch the buy need him in the Press baseball nine. Assessor Gibbons says that property owners who have not yet received as sessment blanks, can get them and have them filled out by calling at his office. The steamer Potter was very late In arriving yesterday, and the officers of the boat stated that she was delayed because of the extra amount of freight now being handled. Tons of salmon, thousands of tin cans, and carloads of canned salmon have kept the boat very busy. Rudyard Kipling, as he showed him self to hi Intimate friends before he became known to all the world, will be the subject of a paper in McClure's Magazine for July. It Is written by a man with whom Mr. Kipling was asso ciated In the editorship of a newspaper in India, and it will be Illustrated with portraits and other pictures from pho tographs furnished by Mr. Kipling's family. On Saturday next occurs the great one mile race between Tallant. of the Multnomah Club, and Coffin, of the Olympic Club, San Francisco. The race will be run at Portland, and Is attract ing great attention In athletic circle. One remarkable coincidence In connec tion with the coming contest between these two giants is the fact that both are about the same age, and, strange to say, were born In the town of Nan tucket, Massachusetts. It will be a veritable instance of Greek meeting Greek. C. J. North, of Chinook, called on his Astoria friends yesterday after noon. It Is reported that the .Multno mah Club' cricketers will play a match game with the Astoria club on the Smith's Point grounds the Fourth. The same club will send down a team of football players to meet the II wa cos on their ground the same day. The baseball nine of the Multnomah will also play the Astorian on the Fourth. The athletic boys seem to be full of business. The Columbia ttiver Will Soon Have a Line of Fast Oriental Steamers. The arrival early yesterday morning of the steamer Asloun. direct from Yo kohama, revived comment upon the question of Increased service between this port and Japan and China. It Is well known that the establishment of a line of first-class ocean liners be tween the Columbia river and the east, has been under consideration for a long while. Yesterday an authority who is posted on the subject, said he did nut think It would be six months before one or two fast passenger and freight steamships would be In thl service. They will undoubtedly be run In the Interest of the O. R. and N. Co., and It Is not unlikely that the Great Northern will have a linger In the pie. When As toria' railroad is completed the Inter change of cargoes and passengers will be made at this port. These are mat ter certainly not to be lost sight of. ASSIGNEE'S NOTICE. Mr. Hanthorn was seen for hull an hour scurrying about the streets, gathering hi party together. When all were aboard. OiUaln Geo. The sail down the bay was enjoyed to the fullest extent by the visitors from the East, as well as those ac customed to Astoria weather and As toria pleasures. There was Just enough wind to make a ripple on the water, a.'ii the hundreds of fishing Imata with sails spreud. which thickly dotted the bay. was a novel sight to both Strang, era and home people. The run was made to the railroad b ridge, where the signal was given, and passuge made through the druw Just to see If the little launch would go through or not. I., rapidly assuming proportions, and the second story Is well along towards completion. The house Is artistic In de sign, and so arranged that every room will be well lighted. Window and doors are large, and a large veranda extends around the entire building. Re side, the large office, reading rooms, dining rooms etc., there will be nfty two bed chamber. After Inspecting the hotel to th. sat isfaction of the good doctor, a visit was paid to the railroad work, and the ladles of the party fully satlsfled them - selves that there was a railroad grade, and that piles were being driven for the big dock. Mr. Gosslln eenied to be a little bit worried a to whether or not it would be completed In time to receive the teel rail which are expected shortly on the Chelmsford. Contractor Fastabend, however, assur ed him that all would be well. On the return trip the launch proved herself a good sailer, and steamed up the bay at a rapid rate. A splendid view was had of Huddle Mountain and Onion Peak, and Miss Conn.
