"So here. Mayor Taylor," said n res ident of Duane street the other day." "this thing must be stopped. What's the use of a license law If you don't enforce It?" "Well, what's the matter now? What In thunder are you kick ing about?" retorted the mayor "Why sir. the town Is full of peddlers, liter ally overrun with them and n.it a move made to stop 'em. It's a howling shame!" "H'm! "Do you know. 1 rather like the Jap anese formalities at the launching of a ship," said a gentleman Just returned from a trip abroad. "When we Amer trans do anything of that kind we break a bottle of champagne on the bows. Of course the custom has sig nificance, whether any one knows what It is or not. The Japanese let loose a lot of pigeons, who fly toward the four quarters of the earth. Exactly what that means I cannot say. but of the two customs I think the prettier one Is the product of Japan. Reside. it seems tx bad to waste champagne In that way." In discussing the question of ex penses of the visit of the militia, a well known lawyer yesterday said that the expense to the county of having the militia here consisted principally in luxuries that might be voluntarily incurred or offered to the troops, and In the rental of grounds for camping purposes, which In this Instance, were furnished free. Under the laws of Ore gon, the expense now Incurred by counties or cities Is different from what It formerly was when the mllltla were entirely enrolled under state laws. Nowadays the mllltla In nearly every state are enrolled under national guard laws and a large portion of their ex penses are borne by the nation. The score was 44 to !1, and In the fourth Inning every ExaiUner fanned out; not' that they couldn't hit the sphere, but because such action shortened the game. The boys had a delightful time, excepting perhaps. Hut Ross, who showed a disposition to throw up his situation on the way home. The Examiners have won ev -ry game so far played, and their hec'i are gradually swelling. Some time this week the Examiners and the A. F. C. nine will come together. s the f r mer team Is composed of men, a vic tory for the latter will be a tall feaVier In their hats.' TO OUR READERS.
