Superintendent Nicoll says that he will now be able to rush the construction of the building, and that he anticipates no further delay. An old fisherman yesterday In con versation with one of the merchants, remarked that If there was any '.ruth in the bribery story. It seemed pretty hard on the rank and file of the men that their officers should be making so much more money than the rest of them. Complaints are still made that houses to rent are very scarce in Astoria. Suitable dwellings for the accommoda tion of small families are almost Impos sible to find, and very few of those on the market have modern conveniences. The change of time advertised by the Astoria and Columbia River Railroad Company, between Astoria and Sea side, Is a partial resumption of the summer schedule, and affords largely Increased facilities for travelling. The putting on of a Sunday train also ac commodates excursionists much better than heretofore. The type In which the Astorlan Is now being set Is being adopted by ail ot the leading Eastern papers. The Pioneer Press, of St. Paul, is one of the latest to adopt the new dress. The New York Herald, one of the acknowl edged leading newspapers of the world, has been using this face for a number of months past. Mr. Joel Danlelson, brother of AugUHt Danielson, arrived yesterday morning on the steamer Columbia from Sweden. Mr. Danlelson Is a young man and is bent on a voyage of discovery. He says that a good voyage was had all the way, the entire trip only occupying three weeks. So far as he has been able to observe in the rapid Journey across the continent, he thinks that business is better in the old country than it is here.
