The political death of those who are promoting the cause of silver Is pre dicted by Comptroller Eckles. and should It carry at Chicago, he says, demoralltatlon will be sure to follow. He opine that it is Just as well to have the question settled now and forever. Senator Gorman was so disgusted with the tide of affairs in the Demo cratic ranks that he abandoned all Idea of being delegate to Chicago, and re tired from the national committee. Since his defeat in the Maryland state election the senator has soured on things political, as they have lost the roseate tinge now that he is shorn of power. vividness that an unpivjudieed man can but tremble for the narrow escapes our country has had. The policy of keeping n reserve, which must .. constantly tamper, d with, to be held to the traditional JUKI. iW.mai Is fat getting us Into difficul ties. The coming administration, be- It Republican or LVmocratlo, has a real Issue to meet that any amount of oam- l!gn remedies cannot alleviate. When all ia done and the president elected there will be the old question of putting the nuances on a solid footing. There really ought not to exist In such a well-supplied nation a the rnlted Stale (his constant, patchlng up system to keep the national credit afloat. In concluding his report. Secretary CarllOe state.: owing to the dlscournslng condition j of our financial affairs and the conse ' .jtii nt i.iofc of conrtdence In the ability iof th,- Rvrnnu'nt pe-nnam titly to maintain a reserve under a system of I rcd"imtton and reissue of notes, verv cvt:liler.ihle iliSlculty was encountered In e!Tec-lins the loan Invited by the pro. p.sils of January IT, 1W4, and at one time pending the call It was foam! that the effort would fail. However, owing to extraordinary exertion made during the last two or three days preceding the time when the bids were to be opened, subscriptions for the whole am mnt were secured, as hereinbefore stated. "At the time the contract of Febru ary $, lSi-j, was made the emergency was so pressing that the whole purpose of the loan would have been defeated If the replenishment of the reserve had been postponed for a sufficient length of time to advertise for bids, and be sides It was exceedingly doubtful whether, under the circumstances, any sales could have been made to the gen eral public upon as favorable terms as to the rate of interest as were secured by that contract." The above Is left to the thoughtful consideration of our readers. wamt i itiiiif!' a d a r C 7i it d it it it it Sound money men In the Democratic party are deriving a little comfort from the fact thst the victories for silver In Texas and many places In Ohio have been achieved on a light vote, indicat ing that people were so disgusted they would not go to the polls. The silver Res see In this lock of interest a pros pect that they may be overwhelmed where they counted on success. It was very magnanimous of the strikers to let Colonel Summers and his command have some of the salmon In . the river "for their own consumption." and the appointment of a detail of good anion men to keep the messes of the soldiers supplied with all required quantities of this seasonable dainty during their more or less protracted stay here, also savors of a most thoughtful and merciful spirit on the union's part. Under this excellent ar rangement not only will the colonel's commissary be saved the expense of buying flsh. but no poor, starving devil of a non-union fisherman will be tempted by the Increased demand to seal his future fate by sneaking out to fish at the local markctrm n's paltry price of 10 cents per pound. The Chicago Tribune says sound money Democrats In Burlington and other towns in Southeastern Iowa are getting ready to bolt the free coinage presidential candidate of their party, even If his name is Boies. They are signing pledges which read: "At the coming general election we will not support any candidate for president or member of congress who is not known to be opposed to the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to L" The best Democrats In Southeastern Iowa are signing this pledge, copies of which are to be sent to other states. so that sound money Democrats In those states may put themselves on record. If they see fit. Many will not care to do so, but when election day comes they will refuse to mark their ballots for free coinage candidates. The Republicans can have the votes of all these Democrats on one condition. It Is that they nominate honest money men on an honest mony platform. The heart of every true American re siding in Astoria throbs with pride and exultation at the sight of our brave and sturdy Oregon National Guards men, and their welcome presence here Will advertise the assurance to the Saoelit that our people are not quite so isolated and far away from civilization as to be beyond the security and prompt protection of the Stars and Btripes, whenever that protection is needed, or In the judgment of loyal and courageous rulers there Is reason able occasion to call for It. Even If ther had been no cause for alarm in the extraordinary condition which has prevailed and from which every man, woman and child In the community has suffered for the past six weeks or two months, the wholesome object lesson as to the celerity with which the streets of the city can be made to re sound with the steady tramp of strong and determined men wearing the blue uniform and bearing trappings and equipments Inscribed with the thril ling legend "U. 8.," Is worth the ex pense Incurred ten times over. Gov ernor Lord, Judge Gray, and Mayor Taylor have all gone up Innumerable notches In the estimation of their fel low citizens In the past few days, and they need have no fear of any lack of appreciation or support If the neces sity ever arises to submit their acts to the test of enlightened public senti ment and opinion In any and every sec tion of the good old patriotic state of Oregon.
