VAST OUTPUT OF CHEAP SILVER. , The last report of the director of the mint contains a table giving the silver coinage of the mints of the world for the years lSTJ-lStH Inclusive. The total number of ounces was MS2 millions. The coinage value was IT56 millions. This vast sum of silver bullion was coined during the twenty-two years subsequent to the "crime of '71," Nev er was there so much coined during any preceding twenty-two year period; and yet. In spite of this enormous con sumption for monetary purposes, the . commercial value of silver kept on fall ing during the whole period. This is not surprising in the light of the fig ures showing the enormously increased production of stiver. The total output of the world for the twenty-two years was S.130 millions of ounces. For the last seven years the production was S-7S million ounces, as against 1.151 million unces in the fifteen preceding years. The number of ounces coined during 1SSS-1S94 was 747 millions. That was heavy, but the price of silver was not enhanced. The experiment of adding to the value of silver by coining It has been tried on .a grand scale and has failed utterly. An ounce of silver weighs ISO grains, while a silver dollar contains but STlvi grains of pure silver. An ounce, therefore, equals about 130 cents. During the three years the Sherman act, purchasing 4,500,000 ounces of silver per month, was In force, Ja.S50.000 of silver certificates were Issued monthly. At the end of the three years this bad money caused ' a panic which broke over 500 banks la a fortnight. ' ' ' ' . THE KONET OF CIVILIZATION. Tke Century Magazine for June, con tains a strong and admirable editorial ,r an "Gotd. tha. Money of Civilisation." It points out that for the last hundred yean an (he grj.u nations have been coming to the gold standard of value. For the purpose of money gold baa been found by experience to be supe rior to every other metal, and its adop tion as su:h has been the result of evolution. . Why should it not be the standard money? Every bdy prefers it when he has to receive money for his labor or his merchandise. It 'is gold that the mis ;r hoards, and that the thrifty save, ' and that the traveler carries with him on bis Journey. It is the one form of wealth current the world over, and that mi y the most speedily be ex changed for whiUver one desires. It is. too, increasing in quantity, while at the same time it preserves stability of value, so that its use as y money is not limited by a diminishing supply. Civilization and gold go hand In hand, and yet in the United States, one of the most progressive nations of the world, we see a large political par ty contending for a baser metal and a .degraded currency! The consoling reflection Is that there Is no possible prospect for the success ' of such a party. It would be hard to conceive of stronger testimonial to the value of the services rendered by the P.epubllcan house of representatives to the country than the following from the New York Herald: "There was a further advance yes terday In sliver bullion. Under ordina ry conditions such a rise woull be en couraglng, but fhe preeent movement is attended with the ominous suspicion that It Is based solely on recent revela Hons of the strength of the free coin age sentiment in the West and South. The stock market was dull and varla ble, but was sustained by the action of the house committee in summarily rejecting the bill prohibiting further Is sues of bonds a new evidence of the curious way In which the two branches of congress have reversed their posi tions, the lower bouse now curbing the extreme popullstic tendency of the once conservative senate." The New York World refuses to yield to the array of figures presented by the sllverites, and still insists that a Democrat on a free-silver platform cannot be elected. It says: "Even if we grant them all the states that are doubtful and some about which there Is practically no doubt, even if we as sume that California, Kentucky and Tennessee could be carried for the Democracy under such circumstances and that Idaho, Montana, Kansas, Ne braska, Nevada, the two Dakotas, Or egon, ytaha Wasrrtgton, nn' Wyoming eoiild 'be' won to Democracy by a fr.;e silver policy all these, with Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi,, North Carolina and South Carolina, Texas and Virginia added, would give only 182 electoral votes, where 224 are necessary to a choice. Seventy of those possible electoral votes are extremely doubtful, while about halt the number nie In tho high est degree likely to bo v ast on the other aide, more than offsetting Missouri' seventeen doubtfiI votes even should they be cast for the free sliver candi date. On the other hand. New Eng land, New York, New Jersey. Pennsyl vania, I elaware, Maryland. Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan. Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota are practically certain to be Republican If the IVmoorsts nominate a free-sliver candidate on a five-silver idntform." Here Is a warning to trades union. It happened In London, but is applica ble anywhere: A union which black listed the men employed by a London building firm during last year's s;rlke has been permanently enjoined by the court of appeal from continuing the practice, and ordered to pay t'SVo dam ages. It is positively Hint-mod. with no loop hole for argument, that IVoed will not be a candidate for the vtee-preai I -t.oy under any circumstances. The spi't-.K- rshlp or private life Is prof.-rtvl to the place of figurehead of the smuiIi. St. Louis has Indeed been flri-k-n The building department of that c'.t; says that the cyclone wrecked l.ooo houses. With such widespread kis tatlon It Is astonishing that so few lives were lost. ---1 N It Is not to be wondered at tha. brew ers are able to rule caucuses spd con trol civic elections, when it Is known o.st their annual sales since I" pave increased from IS.S00.iV0 to l: .'W0.
