Clergymen In America are a privileged
class, and they ought to be a very happy
set of people. In Germany and France,
and In Italy also, they must render mili
tary service, Jut as laymen do. In
Germany It is the custom to do them a
favor by consigning them to the hosid
tals, where their professional skill will
com? Into play, but in France, on the
other hand, and In Italy, too, no favor
of any kind are shown them. They must
take their chances with the rest of the
world and go Into the ranks. We Amerl
cans ari a little less severe and a good
deal moro respectful. A great many
clergymen were In the civil war, and
some few were In the ranks as common
soldiers, but It was their option to oc
cupy that position. The truth Is we
treat everybody pretty well in thin coun
try, and It Is the best spot on the globe
to live in.
Mr. H. R. Robertson, of San Franlcco,
who is well known as the successful
; rafter of timber from the Columbia to
j San Francisco, arrived down from Stella
: yesterday afternoon, and will leave on
i this morning steamer for California,
i Mr. Robertson say they are making
! good progress with the raft under con
struction, and that It will not take so
i long to build this one as It did to put
i the one together last year. The men have
, become experts In the work, and expect
to have this raft completed by July IE.
i Next year Mr. Kobertson thinks he will
build three rafts. The present raft in-
eludes an order for VM)i feet of big tim
ber for one of the railroads In California.
There are also three hundred ships' spars
1 and masts ranging from K, to W, feet
In length, and averaging from h to :a
Inches in diameter at the top. The slicks
; are absolutely clear, and are the hand
somest ones which ever left tbo river.
, Mr. Uobertson will return In about three
weeks' time.
i Mr. Knill Schtvht, the architect, left
for Portland last evening, lie said he had
, been And by Mr. Kopn, but It was no
ticed that before he left he appointed Mr.
',. I). Nicoll as superintendent of con
struction of the brewery. The work ot
making ibe concretr, foundation, which
Is being laid on the top of the plies, saw

there are a lot of the boy up there who

It wa getting late; the night policeman

Idly by. HI patience exhausted, and
iteelng another electric car coming along
he stood In front of the track. "Got to

He woke up on the edge of the curb
