New Astoria...
Is located tt the terminus of the Astoria and
Colomtia River Railroad, at the mouth of the
Columbia River.
It fronts on the deep water ot the Columbia
River Hartor. and being perfectly protected from
wind and seas, affords the very best docks for
ships on this bay: therefore, it is the exact spot
for the seaport of the great Northwest.
These facts were recognized by the Astoria
& Columbia River Railroad Co. when
New Astoria Was Selected as
the Starting Point for their Railroad
and the Location for the Terminals. ...
- New Astoria is platted upon a plane high
enough for perfect drainage, and well protected
. by a high ridge behind it.
: v Its streets and avenues are wide, and, in
fact, it is laid out oa modern plans.
, Extensive street improvements are now un
der way.

Mr. E. A. Ketimlller. representing Duff
& Sons. Pittsburg, who Is In lit city,
stated yesterday to an Astorlan repre
sentative that he waa not at all alarmed
about Columbia river salmon. The very
best brands, he said, can be murketed
at profitable prices, providing no cheap
goods are put up under Columbia river
first-grade labels, and also providing that
no fall fish are packed under Columbia
liver labels. He considered the packing
of fall fish more detrimental to the trade
than any other one thing. There are
certain classes of mill hands, miners, and
other workmen in Eastern and Southern
states who demand a cheaper grade ot
salmon, but this demand can be easily
supplied from outside packs or by full
fish packed under other than Columbia
liver labels. He also stated that he
had found the stocks being carried by
merchans to be twenty per cent larger
this year than last. "There will be no
trouble about Columbia river salmon
when It Is properly packed."
At the Fishermen's Union yesterday
afternoon emphatic statements were
made deploring the killing of the flsKer
man near Oak Point early yesterday
morning, if It should transpire that such
an event actually took place. Much dis
belief was expressed as to the truth
fulness of the report, but as a coltln was
sent for on yesterday afternoon's boat
In which to bury the man, there can be
little doubt as to the correctness of the
report. Secretary Jensen said yesterday
morning that he was extremely sorry
about the matter, and that as It was
contrary to all principle, of the Union,
bo would be the first to Investigate. Re
ports received yesterday are to the effect
that Searcy was the one to blame for the
shooting. After having ordered the boats
which approachd him to leave, and when
they did not comply, he first opened lire,
and was kllbid by the return snots from
the other parties. Considerable excite
ment pnvalls In-the vicinity, but so far
ns can be ascertained the men who did
the killing are exonerated by thoxe near
est the spot who have Investigated the
matter. It being asserted that the shoot
ing was done In self-defenre.
