A rumor was current among lhe fisher
men In East Astoria yesterday that the
cannera were willing to pay five cent
per pound for fish If each packer would
deposit a bond In the sum of ll'mo as a
guarantee that he would not receive any
"outside" fish. The ennnerymen furnish
many men with boats and nets each year,
the latter agreeing to pay for the gear In
fish. Some fishermen take their catches,
or a greater part of the salmon caught,
to other canneries than the one from
which they received their boats and nets,
and at the end of the year he
finds that the gear has not been paid for.
The origin of the rumor Is not known.
Inquiry of several canners developed the
simple fact that there had been no change
In their position; that they had not re
cently discussed prices and hod no In
tention of making any deviation from
the prices already established.
