We are unalterably opposed to any aebaaN that will civ to this country a depreciated or debased currency. SCANDALOUS CAMPAIGNING. tta the rising prospect ot McKlnley' nlnallon at 8t- Louis, the Democratic la resorting more and more to the aeriorn campaign resources ot decrying hi favored Republican candidate. Valsa and Venomous depreciation Is about She only remaining stjck tn the Demo cratic arsenals. Its production Is the ady Industry that has flourished with Democratic aid. . The martyred Lincoln was pelted with this mud -up to the day ot his death. Harrison, the last Republican president, vu systematically plastered with It. The acknowledged leader ot the bar of Indiana, the foremost Republican of the state, the accomplished legislator who adorned his seat in the national senate, the sound thinker, the ever-ready and ble debater, has ben pictured ad as a contemptible dwarf, ft tug- Cering under the weight of his grand father's hat. Willi im Henry Harrison was a soldier and a man ot no mean MBIT, but only wilful and scandalous ' r would assert the in capacity ot his grandson for the I of&oe of an American president. When the McKlnley tariff was fash ioned, and enacted It was assailed with wiry art of vituperation, and the chief adium of this abus?d measure was uni versally cast upon the head of the man Whose name it bears. Now, since the specious bubbles of Democratic reform and clover have broken in air; now that tor HcKinley tariff. ly contrast, nal sisen in popularity; now that the charge a responsibility for it seems no longer efitmagrhg, titers is an overstrained ef fort to show that the odium originally heaped upon licKln'cy was Rliosetber snisplactd. According to the recon structed He Of today, McKlnley had little ax nothing to do with Um framing of the measure for ahlch he wis denoun:ed Bve years ago. So he is bellttkd today as merely a pretentious figurehead, ap propria tine the credit ot other men's la bors and brains. Fortunately for McKlnley and the truth, it is clear that the masses of Re publican voters have reco-jnu-jd the gross sntfalrnesa ot this original allotment of odium and Its preposterous revoking. They do not believe that the former chairman of the srays and means om snittee was merely a wooden figurehead at the McKlnley tariff MIL They re call bis long and able service in con gress, his unremitting championship of the principle of protection for American Industries and labor, his remarkable speeches in maintenance of his views to great public assemblies in the leading cities of the country, and they have Judged it fitting that the chief bearer ot the odium should be the bearer also ot the Republican standard nod the Repub can reward. If. as now seems most likely, William JdcKinley wins the Republican conven tion nomination, we have full faith that he will bear the party standard aloft to triumph through the Democratic hail ot depreciation and abuse. Ills spotless private character has thus far defied calumny, and his really admirable abili ties will again be demonstrated In this great campaign beyond any possible stretch of detraction and defamation. It will he a vain and futile straining of WMlicnancy that will seek to pull him town because he clung with millions of : J. SrUam -Americans In years past to the hope ot the ret-jv.lon of the old bi metallic staa'l.ird by the support of a Smiled coinage of silver. ,1 The Item in Sunday's Issue recounting the experience of a person in I'eoria, in., who trial to borrow money, on what is ardfnarily termed "gilt edge" security, Paint moral to the free silver move ment more eloquent than long-winded speeches or columns of editorials. If It Vs impossible now to borrow monty on property of intrinsic value because of the mere apprehension that there may be an unsettled money administration, what would be the result If free silver agi tators should Buc-ioid In foisting their schemes upon a deluded and buffering public? The result of such a catas Cropby is fearful to contemplate, and the situation demands the careful attention of the better element ot all political forties. This is no lime for shuffling or uncertainty, and the man who Is too cowardly or neglectful to go to the polls and vote his own opinions during such a crisis does not deserve to exercise the right of franchise. Probably the strangest remark that Mr. Sovereign made Saturday night was that sound money men ore J"t discuss ing the silver question "to make talk;" the while such men a Mr. Sovereign never say a word. as the delegate to the Republican stale convjmlon at Sac ramento wild, "Consistency, where is your Jewelry?" THE MONEY QIKSTION COMES Chicago Tribune. The Indianapolis News says that ex President Harrison, being consulted about the pl.it form which should be adopted by the state convention, said: Ho believed the party should give ut terance to a conservative sentiment in reaped to the tariil and should be as pronounced ss poewlMe on the money question. He favored an explicit and unequivocal declaration In tavor of the geld standard, saying that the money question and not the unit would be the Issue between the two parties this year. Ex-President Har.-tsoa's advice Is sound. The tariff juration can take care of Itself this year. Every voter knows that the Kopibllcan party, when it has elected a president and lias the supremacy In both housca of congress, will enact a law giving, adequate pro tection where the Wilson-Gorman patched-up law fails to give it, and also providing the government with suttlctcnt revenue. The urgent, burning question now it the money question. The people know how the Republican party stands on protection. They want to snow how strongly It is going to denounce the Infamous proposition of the free rtl veritea that the standard ot values In this country shall be changed and made one-half what It now is in order to vio late millions ot existing contracts. 8uch a change more radical and sud den than any change ot standard in the world's history, would Involve frightful consequences. There would be a panic which would be more disastrous than this country has ever known, and which would last longer. Industry would come to a standstill for a time and would be crippled tor years. The contraction ot the currency caused by shrinkage of " per cent. In the purchasing power of every dollar widen was not gold would cripple all bulaness and throw back the prosperity of the whole country for a lifetime. If congress were to pass this week and the president were to sign a bill adopting the English free trule tariff system, und thus taking away every vestige of pro tection, the consequences would be dis astrous and widespread, but they would be slight compared to the shock a change to silver monometallism of half value dollars would Inflict on the Ameri can people. This country, as a choice of sore evils. can stand free trade better than it can free coinage. Hence the necessl'y for the Republican party In the state and national conventions declaring emphati cally against tampering with the stand ard of values which has existed for 100 years. There will be time enough to attend to other matters after the red it and honor of the country have teen safeguarded against the 1$ to 1 knavish agitation. 1 FATHER DARCY'S W ITT t RETORT. Milwaukee Journal Concerning the celebrated Father Dar cy, probably the greatest wit of that witty nation, Ireland. It is related that he once visited the palatial residence of a perfect specimen of the no iveaux rich es, who lived n the nelehborhood of Dublin, at the Invitation of Its pompous owner. He w V shown all over the house, his host taking great pains, as Is habitual In such cases, to keep the witty and observant priest well In formed as to the cost f all the 'eautl- ful tkings he was shown. Finally, after making the complete tour of the cha teau, the library was reached, its tre mendous shelves groaniruT under the weight of thousands upon thousands of volumes, resplendent In the most mag nificent bindings. Here they seated themselves, and the host said, with a sigh of snobbish exultation: Well, father. I have brought you here last, because this is my favorite room. The other rooms may give pleasure to my wife and my daughters, but this is my plice right here amongst these books, who are my frlands. And these here on the desk (pointing to a score of ultra-looking volumes) are what I may call my intimate friends." Father Darcy got up and examined one of them, when a broid grin spread over his good-natured face, as he said: "Well, it's glad I am to see that you never cut your intimate friends.
