NECAPNEY ROAD
Astoria, Or. March 20, ISM.
Editor Astorlan:
Dear Sir: An effort Is being made Just
now to raise funds for the building of a
wagon road between Arch Cane and Ne
halem City, a distance of seven to nine
miles. A considerable amount has al
ready been raised, and the merchants of
this city will probably he asked to do
nate liberally towards the fund, as It is
expected the opening of this road will
bring to Astoria a trade which hitherto
finds Its way to Tillamook and Portland.
Some time ago the county had surveyed
a road up the Necannlcum to a point on
the Nehalem a few miles above the city
by that name, and an effort was made to
construct a road over that route. An
effort Is being made now by the very
small minority of the people of the Ne
halem country to finish this road, aa
surveyed by the county and abandon
the road recently laid out back of the
Necarney mountain. While It is not
expected they will be successful. It would
be well for the people to unite In getting
the latter road through as It is a cheap
er and much better road from the Ne
halem to this city. A day or two ago
Mr. James Manr and Mr. Cloutrle blazed
a road from Arch Cape to Nehalem
which Is over a veiy easy grade and can
be constructed at a comparatively small
expense. The people of NHcannicum
Beach and Necarney are standing to
gether in their .-ffort at pushing this
road through, and lthlnk with little as
sistance from the people of this city
they will be able to succeed. It Is a
matter of more Importance to Astoria
than one who Is not thoroughly familiar
would surmise, and when finished will
give a splendid thoroughfare across the
entire county to the Nehalem River. The
newspapers of this city should urg: the
encouragement of thl enterprise.
