One of the aiguments of the silver men
Is th.t the re fural of the right of free
coinags destroys the value of one of the
g.eat products of the Untied States, and
diminishes by so much the total of our
national wealth. So far U this from
being the truth, that the cessation of
silver coinage and silver purchase by the
government has helped to make a mar
ket abroad for this metal where none ex
isted before. This is one of those curious
and unexpected results that fequently
appear from a study of the trade reports.
We are told that Europe has "demone
tised" silver, and that the markets of the
world have been closed against it by our
course. Silver not being a commodity
that can be used In any way to suppcrt
life, and being available only for use as
money and In the arts. It might naturally
be supposed that to extend the market
for It in any other way than by restcr
nlg its monetary use In some country or
other would be Impossible. Yet the facts
tell a different story.

year came the repeal of the Sherman act.
and the cesastion of the puchase of It of
4.300.000 ounces per month. This was an
absolute cutting oiT of a steady demand
to that amount, while the closing of the
mints of India at the same time nar
rowed the world's markets that much
more. It looks, on the face of It. as if
It were not possible, under such circum
stances, to find any opening for the dis
carded metal. But the net export of
silver In ISO was ts.000.ooe, and In ISM It
rose to 136.140,000, and while the exact
figures for 1SS3 are not yet obtainable, it
is believed we sent out even more than
in im. This is the largest quantity of
silver exported, in excess of Imports, in
the history of the country. And at this
