The party with on principle,' over which It makes a such fuas as a young hen, over Its one chicken th free sUver party will bold Its national convention at St. Lou la on th 1M of July, Just after th Populiata bare held their. Th convention will not have much to do and need not remain lone In session. All that It can do still b to Indors th nominees of th Populists, who will b la favor of th free coins- of silver and also of a number of other foolish and wicked measure. If th one-idea party nominate candidate of Its own they will far about as well as th candidate of th Drvs. Th Pop ar not going over to the free silverite. They say they rav an or ganisation and a large supply of princi ples of which free silver Is one, but by no means th most Important Tbey an for SO-cent dollars first, but they prefer fiat scrip legal-tender (-cent dollars. Tbey want th government to loan that scrip to all who are In debt that th debtors may turn that scrip ever to their cred itors and cheat them. Naturally th Pops do not want to dis card th mass of their "reform doc trine and limit themselves to on which contemplates th confiscation of only halt tbo credit In th country, while they desire to confiscate the whole. The Pops ar quit right when they say that while they ar ready to swallow th free silver lies It Is absurd for the latter to Ulk of swallowing them. So th national convention of th free sUverites will be cither a Populist side snow or It will b nothing. Th only platform which will contain their pet idea will be that of th Populists. So they must cither Indors Populist can didates or nominate men who will get very few votes. For when election day comes most of th men who call them selves free silverites will rot with the old parties, though they are protesting now they will never do so. Th free silver Democrats of Oregon, for Instance. will ding to the Democratic party, no matter what its platform may be. THE PEOPLE'S CANDIDATE. The Boston Standard says the true American people have their ideal candi date for president this year. If they could search out and know the man near est In flesh and blood to their ideal, they would make his calling and election sure. The people' candidate ls an American, born of virgin soil like the grass ot the prairie. Every fibre of bis being has the new world's vitality and spirit. Instinct with liberty, loathing oppression, scorn ing the artifice of rank and class dis tinction, holding the truth to be self evident that all men are created equal. The people's candidate ls a man whose 'manliness 1 Innate and Invincible. He stands on his own legs, earns his own living, and mount upward without any props of bequeathed fortune or family Influence. He truckle to no man, fears no man. and wrongs no man. He does Justice, love mercy and walks humbly before God alone. The people's candidate is a man with a great warm heart, owning the common brotherhood of all mankind, and throb bing for the hopeless exile In Siberian mines, the Aremnian shuddering under the butcher knife, the vilest slave that groan In darkest Africa, as well as for the child struck down on his own hearth stone. The people's candidate Is a man with a great working brain, loving learning for Its own sake, burying no talent which God has given him, never sluggish In en deavor, catching opportunity by the fore lock, doing duty to the uttermost in every service he undertakes and In every station to which he ts called, holding, fast always to the right, and proving himself In the sight of God and man pre-eminently fit to be a leader of the people. The people's candidate Is a man of sim ple manners and unaffected ways, tem perate In living by nature and by choice, unspoiled by flattery, not puffed up by exaltation, rich In saving common sense, abounding In pleasant humor and ready wit, genial In bearing and conversation. maintaining ever his self-respect and the rightful dignity of his manhood and sta tion, and always In touch with the plain people. The people's candidate Is eloquent from the Impulse of his heart, and the genius all bis own. He has refined and natural taste by the study of great masters and ine niter oi experience, un occasion ne i will rise to the height of his great argu ment or shake the hearts of his hearers as harpstrlngs vibrate. But he never mistake bathos for pathos, and always suit bis words to the object In view and the requirements of the hour. He blunts no point by tedious disertation or Iteration. He clouds no light of reason with ponderous platitudes or cumbrous conceits. He speaks and writes with a clear brain and a certainly of effect that 1 goe home at once to the people at large. Senator Mil cheil is evangelising the senate by speeches on the floor. His remedy for the growing debt to Europe which drains out of the country more gold every year than we mine is two-fold: "First, our shipping laws must be amended, our merchant marine must be encourairifl and built up, and we must become our own carriers: and. second, we must legis late to Increase the value of our export commodities so as to enable us to meet, reduce and. if possible, to wipe cut, the debt which today makes the people of this country virtually the slaves to the money-lenders of Great Britain." When the Republican party returns to power, it doubtless will endeavor to ap ply the first of these remedies, but It is likely to shrink appalled from the task of increasing, by legislation In Washing ton, the price ot wheat, cotton, petro leum and dressed meat in London.
