If there were. It , would be of small avail. The na-ne cutsi little ngure, and I not Kocn was mere oe- i fore the line between California and Ore gon waa dreamed of. it will stay there long after all state linos shall haw been obliterated from the cold surface of the to u,,. a Hammond, the b. Marcus Whitman, a w anderer of old who bad the misfortune to atumble upon the Webfoot country In his aimless gad-ling! about fn search of new territory, the. whole thing then to be dedicated as a' monument to the doctor. The Crater' Club deserves simply to be borled aMve In the lava of its own name. That Is a' punishment fitting the crime of any or-. arrang,.m,.n, uh ell known English ganlxation or any man that desecrates , flrn, Tht,rc olhins Improbable In the grand natural monuments of this,sl,ch , r,,mor. On the contrary. It is land of ours by planting patent medicine! characteristic of the spirit which has anl adverUsements or coats-of-arms or j mated Japan since the forces of civllixa mere names upon the faces of the rocks j ljcn overtook It, and especially during the that have looked into the eye of the sun j reCent past, that It should be In a posl for ages without blinking. j tlon t0 tuil.l its own ships of war corn- Fancy the dedication of a mountain to , piete. It is a shrewd rlan to secure the any human insect having the temtrity to help of a foreign firm, with the prlvll.-ge crawl up Its face with the aid of rope ladders and Alpine stocks and bottles of brandy to sustain its falling strength, and you will get a notion of the crime the Crater Club boldly avows Its determina tion to commit! A mountain dedicated to a man! Eah! The man should be thankful that the mountain does not fall over upon and cnijh his littleness. And then, to add to the Indignity, the carving of the coat-of-arms upon the face of Pilot Rock! of Oregon What has Pilot Rock done to deserve this? As that quality which will make the'r dls well talk of carving a wart upon the nose! semlnu'ion abroad helpful lo Astoria and of the sphynx. or of putting an electric j light mast upon the summit of Mount: Vesuvius. The coat-of-rms of Oregon Is not a pretty thing to look upon, at it3 best and In Its proper place. No state's ! to the public a clean, bright and readable coat-of-arms Is. The herald-at-arms ' daily. Y heartily congratulate the man waa somehow a new man at the job agerntr.t of the paer on ft success and when the various devices for the stvtral states of this mighty nation were given! out. Still, Oregon, like the rest, can man-j age to worry along comfortably un-ier: the present coat, so long as she does not attempt to inflict It upon her mrchbors. nor permit of It being carved upon rocks! and places where he w ho runs may de-' ride. The rest of the world has no in terest in a coat-of-arms kept for parlor use, and will content to give Ir. Whit man the tribute of Its silence while his merit be not proclaimed too loudly. If the Crater Club wants the memory of the old gentleman kept green, it will begin by letting Pilot Rock alone. That he longs to the world, and Is a bit of '.he monument to a mightier than any mere man. The whole world Is a part of that same monument, and the universe and Its Inscription is written In star dust and cannot be obliterated. The monuments of men should be the work of the hands of men. THE RAILROADS IN I-3. The year Just ended has not been one of extreme depression or great excite ment among railway Interests, nor has It been one of general prosperity. Efforts! to oP rate demoralization and , re-i organize old associations have occupied much of the time of traffic offie.als, ar.d ' have generally been attended with final success. The Southern States Passenger Association, Southern States Freight As sociation, Southwestern Traffic Associa tion, Western Passenger Association, I Transcontinental Association and others! have been reformed and put in operation! with encouraging prospects, and the last weeks of the year have been signalizid! by the formation of the Joint Traffic As-! sociatinn which started out on January 1 to maintain rate on the trunk lines and their Western connections. ! No railway strikes have disturbed the year the brief outbreak on the Great -v....e... n noremwr naving only exhib- i Ited the complete disruption of the Ameri-1 can Railway Union. After two periods of ir,i, . ,v.i .i. , i Imprisonment this year, the leaders of, that evil organization were recently set at j liberty and have returned to their orig-' lnol obscurity. j Two notable foreclosure sales and re-! organization have taken place within a1 few weeks, those of the Xtchlson, Toneka! A Santa Fe and Erie. The Reading re- organization plan Is likely soon to be ac ompllshed. The gn-.u run of ihe Lake Shore train from Chtvapo to Hufrslo In October and the shortening up by tulf a day of the time Niwcen Clilcaso and California by both the Santa Fe and Vnlon Paclllc routes, Illustrate the tendency toward faster travel which la not yet sat.silcd. The charge and developments in Ore gon railroads during the past year or two have been radical and rr-rvaehlns. T! e Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. was separated from the Cnlon Paclrte ainl placed In Ihe hands of a different re ceiver; the old Oregon raoille, which has had so many up and di-ns,-prlnetpally downs-was sold by order of court and passed Into the hartds syndicate, of which A. 1J.
