The British rhlp irowhan will arrive in Astoria from Portland early next week. The British bark L'alkamah came down the river from Portland yesterday In tow of the Emma Ha j ward. The heavy southwesterly (rale that was blowing all day precluded the possibility of any ships leaving: port and ail 11. d ca tions point to the same wta her cond.tlons for the next forty-eight hours. The ship Fiery Cross, from. Cardiff for Victoria, which put into Montevideo on August 31st, has been chartered for grain homewards. Her coal cargo was sold on October 25th. B. C. Commercial Jour nal. The schooner Amerltan Girl was towed to sea yesterday morning-, says Monday's Call, and during her passage over the bar lost her bowsprit In a collision with the schooner Laura May, also outward bound. The disabled vessel returned to port for .-epalrs. As cargo the C. P. R. steamship Em press of India, due here from the Orient on Tuesday, says the Colonist, ha 1,G50,'.OU pounds of overland freight, 325 tons meas urement of silk goods, 250 tons of gen eral freight for Vlctotla, Including a Ug shipment of Japanese oranges, and 60 tons for the Sound. As passengers the ship carries 20 saloon and 125 steerage voyagers. Yesterday the schooner Teresa took out her clearance papers at the custom house for a hunting cruise In Japanese waters. She is the first of the sealing fleet to do so and will, it Is expected, be tho first to sail, although several others, as previous ly stated, are also about ready for sea. The Teresa will be commanded by Cap tain McMillan, and will carry as a ciew 8 whites and twenty Indians. The latter she will secure on the west coast before proceeding to the Japanese coast. Colo nist. The Gypsy left Corvallls Sunday for points above, the intention of the captain being to get her as far as Eugene, If pos sible. He had orders to secure the serv ices of several of the government snag boat craw, at present in that section of the valley, and take them to a point called Lee's Defeat, where Innumerable "nags ar d much driftwood obstruct boat navigation to a great extent. By a lib eral use of giant powder. It is thought this channel con bo opened to sdtnlt' of the passage of boats, thus affording the Eugene merchants greater facl lties for securing freight. The schooner Western Home, which ar rived from up the coast last night, hnd a narrow escape from going on the rocks' while coming Into port, says the Chron icle. She was caught In the bight be tween the Cliff House and Fort Pol"t. An anchor was thrown out, but it was carried away, and a 1,-edgn was brought Into play. The tug Reliance rffred the enptaln a tow, but as the latter would not pay more than $25 no contract was made. The breakers almost rolled the sohooner. over, and tho captain of the Reliance Thade sure of a salvage Job, the sk'nnor of the schooner under stood his business, and he kedgrd ' way out-and sailed Into port without assistance. The remains of John Wallace, cook of the ship Eaton, who fell overboard last night and was drowned, were rec.iv'ed thls"mornlng, says the Taeorra Ledger. The body was found floating under the Ocean wharf. Wallace was about 60 veurs old and a native of Worcestershire, England. He spent much of hU l"e In Amprica. He had been with the Eaton Hall six months. The coroner dee'ded to hold no investigation as to the c"sp rf the death. It was sufficiently evident that the (ireeased met his death acci dentally. The fact that the holy was floating this morning Is proof that the man must have been killed by the fa'l as a drowned mm remains under the water at least nine days. The H3:"la Washlngtonlan says o' the new pilot boat being built therte hv the Washington pilots for use at the mouth of this river: "The new pl'ot ehooner begins to look like a bcrt. But her unusual appearance Is a ma'ter of "omment by all. Bhe Is formed especial ly for speed and short t.irn'n. Tt 1 ald she Is so round on the bottom ps to -e able almost to turn In her own length. The complaints 01 excessive fre'ght rates by the citizens of California and their attempts to secure lower rats by "rrpv.lsory action of the state railroad ct ."mission, and by building a competing railroad from Han Fiaiiclxro do n San Joaquin valley, have been generally set down an merely manifestations of the same hostility to railways on the part of farmers and shippers that has been so generally displayed In most of the West ern states during the past dozen years. Advices from San Francisco, however, give particulars of the starll' g of freight wagons to compete with the Southern Pacific In the carrying rf goo-Is b'tween San Francisco and the San Joxqtiin vul- ley. According to that report, the South ern Pacific's rates on suvar frum San Francisco to Fresno, a distance of 207 ndles, is 61 cents per va pounds, or $10 20 per ton. This excessive charge has caused one wholesale grocery firm to ship Its sugar by steamer to Stockton at a cost of 1 per ton, and thence by slx- rr.ule freight wagons to Fresno, a dis tance of 146 miles. It Is claimed that the freight wagons can make this hail for Ki per ton, or about t.S cents per ton- mile. It seems doubtful wheth-r the cost of haulage ever common roads could be t.roi'irht so low as this, but It Is quite likely that frelrhters cou'd afford to do the work for i cent per ton-mile, the same rate as the railways. If the s'afp' ment as to the Bouthern Pacific's rate Is correct. It would seem that the comp'alnts cf excesive charges which the citizens A. M. P. U. A. M. P.M. The Portland Telegram says: "Second Officer Fiddes, of the British ship Sa markand, lying at the O. ta C. dock, met with (. fall this morning, the Injmles re tultnig from which may prove fatal. About 8:30 o'clock this morning thj sec ond' mate descended Into the hold to re? port on tho cargo of Hour being tuken aboard. Reaching the 'lwen deoks the mate started aft. On account of thu falling snow both the main and after hatches were on, leaving no light In tho hold after the fore hutch had beon left behind. How the accident happened no one yet knows, Mr. Fiddes bsli.g in such a precarious condition as to be unable to talk, but it Is supposed that on reaching the main hatch In the darkness he tilpped on tho combing and was precipitated head foremost to the bllgo ot the snip below, a distance of slxteon feet. The unfortunate man struck fairly on hi head, mfllctlng a fearful scalp wound ex tending from the top of the head to a point over the right eye. His right ear was nearly torn from tne scaip, it nang- Ing by a shred of skin when the mate was brought on deck. How long he had lain In the bottom of the ship Is not known, the first Intimation of the acci dent having happened coming from the stevedores engaged In loading the ship, through their hearing the wounded man groaning. Willing hands at once got him on deck, Captain Whltton telephoning for City Physician Wheeler. Mr. Fiddes was still unconscious when the phyBlclan ar rived, It requiring some effort to restore him, and then he was too weak to give any account of how his fall was caused. After the man's wounds were dressed Captain Whitton had him removed to a comfortable room In the after cabin, awaiting the result of the Injuries. It has not as yet been determined whether serious Injury has been done the brain, although the skull Is evidently fractured. Captain Whitton Is entitled to sympathy. Last week, while his first officer, Mr. Chappell, was ashore, he slipped and fell, and sustained a fractured ankle, necessi tating his removal to the hospital. With the disabling of the second officer the captain has the entire work of the ship thrown on him, which, with the shore work Incident to a vessel taking cargo, makes a heavy burden."'
