Tho Astorlan wants a man of honesty, Intelligence and education to be at the head of our municipal government, and In tr rmnk J. Taylor we have recognised these qualifications. Besides this, the fact that he Is a sterling Republican, an acK nowledeed legal authority and an Inde pendent thinker are In our eyes additional ml auhstantla! reason why he should be elected. If, in our" advocacy of the elec tion of Mr. Taylor. Pr. Kinney suffers by comparison, that Is Dr. Kinney's misfor tune, not the Astorlan's fault. Tho Republicans of Astoria met at Wise' old store last night to meet their candlilates for city offices for the last !'"? before election and to hear them P'.k on the issues of the campaign. Hi- J. A. Fulton was In the chair. The ha" wns crowded and the greatest en thusiasm was evoked during the evening. All tha candidates were present on the nlatform and ai'dreed the audience. At ihe conclusion cr th se speeches several nromlnent Republicans were called for tnd presented their views on the situation In a vigorous manner. Mr. C. W. Fulton, whose address closed 'tie proceedings, dwelt at some length on lie standing of the candidates on the "Citizens' " ticket and particularly on fr. Kinney's record and his contract with Mr. Stanton. The speaker showed how ho second letter was only an aggrava Ion of the first offense and stated that he had been reliably Informed that the'seo--ii !" I'-nmcnt had been written for the first lime last Sunday, and not twenty months ago. Mr. Fulton concluded: "I regret that that first letter was ever written. I regret that occupying a public trust Dr. Kinney has fallen so low as to betray that trust. But the moro he ex Hains the worse U gets. He can go on "uplalnlng from now to doomsday and he can never free himself of this charge. It is beyond the power of human reason and human logic to explain It away. There Is only one explanation that fits the ease, and that is one that honest men hate to think of." Awarded Highest Honors World'! Fair, Cold Medal, Midwinter Fair. CriEATv! Most Tcrfect Made. 40 Years the Standard. Only a Ten Thousand Dol lar Fee. How the Doctor Was Willing to Sac rifice Himself In the Interests of the Committee and His , Fellow Citizens. In his candidacy for the mayoralty, Dr. Kinney Is using the argument that in his endeavors to procure tho construction of the Astoria and Columbia River Rail road, he had acted voluntarily, and with cut compensation, or hope of compen sation. ' A letter was written by Dr. Kinney whilst he was chairman of the R. R. committee of twenty-one, known as the "Committee of Direction," to Mr. Stan ton, who was here In Astoria endeavor ing to procure from the committee a contract for the construction of the rail road. This is the nigger In the woodpile that the balance of ythe committee tried so hard to find. The letter is in the well known handwriting of Dr. Kinney, and Is as follows: ASTORIA, MARCH 10th, 1894. MR. J. C. STANTON:- DEAR SIR: I HAVE FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS GIVEN ALMOST MY ENTIRE TIME DEVELOPING WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE GOBLE OR COL UMBIA RIVER ROUTE FOR A RAIL ROAD FROM ASTORIA. Curtis hove been Industriously circulating the state ment that Mr. George Johnson, candidate for the office 0f city attorney on the in dependent ticket, "has not the ability to fill the position." It may not be out of place to say that Mr. Johnson passed his Oregon law examination, after years of conscientious study, at the head of the list of applicants before the supreme court, and that he was complimented from the bench by Judge Murphy on his excellent showing. We append the following letter, dated the "University of Washington and Lee. Lexington, Wr. Va., July 11, 1S95." This letter Is signed by C. A. Graves, professor of common and statute laws, and John Randolph Tucker, dean of the university and professor of equity and commercial law, and of constitutional and Interna tional law. Mr. Tucker is known to every attorney In tho United States as one of the most brilliant lawyers now living: "Mr. George Johnson, of Astoria, Ore, attended this law school In the session of 1S9I-95 of nine months. His diligence and studious habits were exemplary, and his acquirements In the law were ample to qualify him for successful work in his profession. He exhibited unquestionable native ability as a thinker and q eaker, and his high and honorable character and studious methods give prom.se, in our opinion, of a high position in the profes sion he has chosen. We do r.ot hesitate to say this of him, for he has not only merited our commendations as a student. but our friendship and esteem as a man." The letter he wrote to Mr. Stanton is in our possession. It is published again on the fourth page ot this paper, so that every voter in the city can see what manner of man it Is who comes before them a second time and asks them to elect him mayor. He ack nowledges he wrote the letter. In it he violates the trust reposed in him, asks for ten thousand dollars for services ren dered by himself, and the return of his two little lots. While chairman of a com mittee appointed to get a railroad to As toria "on the best possible terms, pledged to do his utmost and bound by EVER TIE OP HONOR to work for that ob ject, he tried to enter into an infamous bargain, tried to deceive his fellow com mitteemen, and his fellow citizens, and tried to betray the city of Astoria for ten thousand dollars. Mayor Kinney can "explain," and can pile untruth on un truth in his effort to shake oft this shame ful fact.
