The Glencalrn was towed up the river yesterday. The American ship Reaper, of the Sut ton & Beebe line, arrived down from Port land last night. On yesterday's runs the Undine took the place of the Lurline and the Thomp son of the Potter. The master of the British steamer Ma. dura cables from Corunna, Spain, that his vessel, bound from Hamburg to Port itoyal, s. C, foundered In mid-ocean No vember 28th. The State of California left for San Franelsco early yesterday morning with 350 passengers, among whom were the following from Astoria: H. W. Sherman and wife, J. L. Bellinger, W. S. Case, and Alexander Johnson. The Signal came in yesterday morning from British Columbia ports with 650 tons of coal and twenty-four Chinese. Seven of the Chinese claim to be Astoria merchants and desire to land here. Col lector Page will examine them today. A dispatch received at the Merchants' Exchange yesterday, says the Commer cial News, reports a terrific gale raging In the English channel. Tho steamer Germanic, from New York, was obliged to enter Cork harbor and anchor to land passengers and mail. . British bark Royal Alice, Rnngoon for Falmouth, reached Cork harbor partly dismasted. The coal shovelers In the hold of the British Bhip Lancaster Castle had a nar row escape Friday In San Francisco. As one of the tubs containing over a ton of coal was being hoisted the tall rope caught In the coaming of the hatch and carried away the hoisting gear. The tub and all Its attachment went flying Into the hold and fell almost in the midst of the thirteen men employed there. No one was hurt except for a few slight bruises from the flying coal. The steamer City of Kingston took out a consignment of paper this morning for Vancouver, to be shipped to Sydney, Australia, by the Canadian Paclflo steam ship line. There will be, says the Ta coma News, 60 rolls of paper 7 feet S Inches long and 2V4 feet In diameter. Each roll weighed 1,400 pounds. There wore also 40 bales of sheet paper, weigh ing in all 25,855 pounds. Both lots of piper together weighed 110,315 pounds. They came from Portland, Or., and are thought to bo the products of the Oregon City paper mills. The pilot boat America has been known as No. 0 ever since she was built, says the Chronicle. Landsmen had only to look for the cipher on the mainsail to to know which boat It was. At the time she was put In commission the America was the fastest boat on the bay, and on account of that fact and In honor of her name she was numbered ahead of all the schooners the pilots have ever built. That sentiment has passed now, however, and In future the America will be known as No. 11. A new suit of sails was put on her yesterday and cn her mainsail the new number Is emblazoned. The services of shipping masters on the west coast of Vancouver have, during the past few years, been considered of abso lute necessity to prevent trouble when Indian crews are being shipped for seal ing schooners, Bays tho Colonist. ThiB was specially manifested last season, when much difficulty was encountered by some of the sealing schooners. Native crews would be secured and at the last moment would be Induced to desert. ' To obviate this and other forms of trouble wjjlch frequently arose, those who were directly concerned have secured the ap pointment of shipping masters at Ahou- set, Claycquot and Kyuquot. The Colonist says: "Those who have for weeks past been watching the pro gress of the rate war and waiting for the time to come when either the Rosalie or the Sehome will offer a liberal bonus for the privilege of carrying them as passer ger appear to be nearlng the goal of heir ambitions. Not that a bonus has been advertised as yet but the rates con tinue to come and are now very close in deed to the free service line. When the Rosalie last met the Sehome cut and an nounced herself open for business at GO cents to Port Townsend or $1 to Seattle, the majority were of the opinion that bottom figures had been reached. The rival steamer was, however, still prepared to go the Rosalie one better, and last evening the order was driven forth that all passengers for Port Townsend and Se at t'- would find the Sehome at their dls posal at a rate of 25 cents to Port Towns end or half a dollar to the Queen City. It is not specified whether or not this in cludes meals and a stateroom; if nut t-re will doubtless be found some who will complain of the greed of tho steam ship company. Whether the Rosalie will "stay" with the fight remains to be seen: if she does it may soon be Just as cheap to go to Port Townsend and return as to enjoy a trip on the tramcar to Beacon hill park. Or perhaps mechanical In genulty may next be railed Into service and the trouble of getting, tickets be obvl ated altogether with the simple announce ment, "Drop a nlckle In the slot and the jteamer will take you to Port Townsend.
