Nearly 7,000.000 pounds of fresh salmon and halibut have been shipped from Se attle this season. This, with the smoked salted and barreled fish, and the oysters, mussels, crabs, clams and shrimps, makes Seattle a great center for the fishing in dustry, an industry that is certain to as sume very large and important propor tions in the near future. The annual report of the bureau of navigation shows that the tonnage of the American merchant fleet Is 4,635,960, di vided among 23,240 vessels. The chief events of the past year have been the initial trips of the - Atlantic liners, St. Paul and St Louis. The repeal of obso lete laws and the law taxing the tonnage of vessels from countries where American vessels are exempt from such tax Is recommended. The disputes between the Clyde ship builders and their employes continue without any change. The builders have lost an order from the Italian govern ment for the construction of three gun boats and twelve torpedo boats, owing to their inability to furnish a guarantee that they would be delivered at a sneci- fled time. The Norwegian government has placed an order for torpedo boats with German builders for the same rea son. The roughest weather seen on Puget sound for many days prevailed yesterday, says the News. No great damage was done to shipping along the Sound. The steamers Cricket and Multnomah each missed a trip to Seattle. The steamer Greyhound made but two trips from Se attle to Everett instead of three. The steamer Glide anchored off Vnshon Isl and. A boom of logs In tow of the tug Laurel got adrift off Robinson's point. The boom went to pieces and the logs were blown up the Sound as far as Com mencement bay, making it dangerous for steamers to run in the bay. The American ship Shenandoah sailed yesterday for New York, says the Chron icle, with almost 5,000 tons of merchan dise aboard. Several hundred people were on the wharf to see the splendid vessel pull out on her long voyage. One per son, however, was not so enthusiastic over the ship. He was a sailor who had drawn and given his advance to the boarding masters, as sailors always do, and then concluded that he would not go to sea. He swam ashore, but was cap tured and taken back to the vessel. How about the Maguire act, which says no ad vance shall be taken from a sailor, and neither shall he be forced aboard of a ship? Charters are now being made in San Francisco for vessels to carry wheat to South Africa and Australia from the Golden Gate. Australia has always fur nished South Africa with wheat, but the failure of the crops in the antipodes this year compels the Australians to turn im porters. Alexander Baillle, Seattle agent for Balfour. Guthrie & Co., was asked If he thought any wheat would go from the Sound to Australia. He said: "No, I do not think they need much wheat there. In my opinion, the wheat already char tered for at San Francisco will, perhaps, supply the delinquency In South Africa and Australia. The new market cannot be permanent." The new revenue cutter for the racifle coast, for which an appropriation was made by last congress, will be a beauty, according to the plans which have been drawn at Washington City, and every effort Is being made to have her built on the Pacific coast. Captain C. L. Hooper, of the revenue marine service, writing to Senator Squire from Washington City, under date of November 10, says: "1 arrived In Washington City a few days since, and am delighted to find almost completed the plans and specifications for the revenue cutter for the Pacific coast. I have been over them carefully, and have no hesitation in saying that she will be far superior to any vessel ever owned by the revenue cutter service. The next most Important thing is to In sure her being built on the Pacific coast. I am particularly anxious about th's; thr people out there take more pride and In terest In vessels built on the Coant. and ran turn out quite as good vessels as Eastern builders." The steamer Pasadena arrived at Eu reka from San Pedro on November 19th. While crossing the bar she shipped three heavy seas from astern In quick succes sion. The steamer Is an oil burner and carries Its fuel in two-4ron tanks on the deckdeck. ' The first sea that she shipped came over the starboard quarter and car ried away one-half of the lifeboat on that side, leaving the after half of the boat hanging from one davit The next sea came over the stern and struck a tank containing about 2,000 gallons of petro- eum. The tank was jammed back on the cabin skylieht, broken, and its con tents poured down through the Fkyllgbt Into the cabin and Into the galley room and engine room. The furnishing of the galley and state rooms were completely ruined and the provisions and utensils In the galley were rendered useless. The third sea washed the oil forward that had not found Its way into the cabin and it changed all the white paint work to a petroleum brown color. NEW VSE FOR OLD GLOVES. Copy of a Toque Designed for the Young Empress of Russia., A jaunty toque seen tnis season is a copy of one among many of the hats, caps and bonnets sent to the czarina from Paris a few weeks ago. The crown Is a bit of white net, shirred over wires, with a flounce of Point applique lace around the edge, which falls In short loops at the sides and In longer ones at the back. The effect is of a veil carelessly fes tooned around the head. Across the front are five large roses, maae or sort biik. rneir color is a curiously blended bue and green in all their shades. Three or four of these same flowers are bunched together at the back, and are half hidden by the lace, At the right side are two large ostrich plumes and an aigrette, which are of the same color as the flowers. The shading, however, Is more blue. At the front, over the 'flowers, Is the large ornament, which gives this hat Its royal appear ance. This (s an almost cross-shaped jewel, studded with brilliant rhlnestones and turquoises. The six blue stones In the center are as large as almonds. The ornament worn by the czarina Is of precious gems.but the copy Is a beautiful simulation, and makes this hat an exquisite bit ot headgear.
