A surprise a&wtuya .brings wtttlh it a sense of peasure never to be found in an event that cornea slowly plodding1 allong over the regular ordalined county iroad of the commonplace. Our istay in Astortui for the past week or more has teen one of many pleuuant sur pitoca, for in aCIl wiaya we lhave found t'hJlngs so imudh foetiter than iWe had anti cipated. We toad iheartl a great deal of Astoria, before we ilrad tihe opportunity of doing ounseOves Vho pHeasuro of visiting it. Wo tad heard it wais extremely rough, one-fourtttii dVillized, tlho ciitlzens all wrapt in a Ellp Van Winkle sleep, the business houses lall Of tlho cniKlwst sort, eJnd the city Jtsettf a very rougft congliomeirate, v'rtose component parts -When picked to pieces, (would prove to 'be a Ashing vll luge, a logging caimp and a mliniing 'hold down." -Prtwn thta our imnln-.-vtlon had pictured iwiiat accommodiatlons would amailt the poor tourist iwho waa called upon to tarry for a nlgiht in Astoria and the pldtures tttait came were far from causing via to write an ode on "The PJeao urea of Imagination," or even settle down Into a pih'Ilasoplhicai mood with Dr. Thiampson and make a careful analysis of "The Scientific Uses of the Imagine tion. We tllmpCy Bald "Begone!" to the Bainqueito's igthost, grlit our teeth together, shut one eye, 'bought a big of fruit, a bar of isoap and a package of Feiairllne, and ma!do up our mind to be armed to meet Hrat Ilia awaitel us in the beat manner poedibCe. As our steaimer rounded Young's Bay and then steaimed into Wie Columbia the sun was shining and kireing with golden bcaulty the dancing (waves that laughed and played dike merry children Just home from iseihooO, iwhllo the sea gulls scolded and oluaitted away In a truly domestic way. This Was pleas-int and tended to drive laway our dark forbodings. It was 6 o'clock when our steamer cast anchor at the wharf, which did not Impress us very agreenlbly, but we were hungry, and so passed hurriedly to see If there was su'oh a thing as a restaurant. We found one nOmost as quick as thought, and stepping Inside, we were more than sur prised, we were more than delighted, to find the appurtenances, bearing so much of the Stomp of a Anst-cCasa restaurant, for this was Astoria, the conglomerate, where we had expucted food best di gested iwlhen unthought of and uromen tloned. We were served with a fine moal that was ailC the more enjoyed from being so unexpected. The surprise we received on our first arrival has been & continuous one; we have everywhere found things so differ ent frtm what we had looked lor and have thus received much true Joy. Our flnst Jaunt of exploration waa made up the hill opposite to the postofflce, where we note many comffortabCe homes by far too pretentious to be classed among the rough shingle ehanties so com mon 1n conglomerate towns. The houses on the hCl are arranged with an eye to the artistic, and the well kept lawns, with "brl'gihJt beds of blooming flowers, tell of an innate tove of the beautiful and a refinement rarely found among "the one fourth civilized." It will pay any one who looks with loving eyes and exults in the beautiful to take a walk up on the MM some afternoon in the sunshine, and there drink in tfie fascinating bits of co.or-dellght that are furnished by the Virginia creeiper, which his found a pjoce In so mamy of the gardens, and is now aH but dazzling to the eye as it reflects the brightest . red from nature s paint brifc-h, this bri'.Mant red In many places oelng found resting on a back ground of dark green and russet brown, and the effecit when lighted tip by the golden sunlight is to furnish a picture that one might feast their eyes upon for aye and ever find a thing of Ibeauty that goes on Increasing its heauty forever. The view from the top of the hi'.! there nre, by the way, a great many so as to give you ample choice Is full of fasci- roattnR charm. There one may watch his pliips that ills fancy sent 1o sea "many, miany weary years affo," he can watch them as they sail to and fro, wandering ever, tin at length he will see up the bay his fihlps return, full of pictures, gems and workts idf art, and buy from them UIC his heart dcsirf:i and forgot all the bit tern esb df luhe past. We surveyed the Etret car line, finding Upper'oitn th- inont pleas'n. We were much inlterestcl In the host of small house bouts that swarm a'.ong the banks of the rlvnr like so many mud turtles crawling up out of the water Into the air and sunlight. They are all ready to flout at a mo ment's notice, and seem an easv wav of denying the real estate man of the ex treme pleasure of selling off choice cor ner lots. And tho flahlng boats and the (Whang nets and the fishing tackle, rav! what a lot to be s'ire, and a'l were say- ins, -xnere are gyoa nsh in the sea." "But, O, they won't be caught." ew tug- gesrted, only to receive in reply an in dignant caw from a passing guU at our pessimistic viaw. We should Judge we saiw a fuU thousand flsMngstands that toO J of the great importance of the Co iumfbiJa salmon induatry at Astoria. But alUhough we saw so many nets we caw few "old "salts" or little fisher maidens; tfhey were either out to sea, engaged in sjme one of 'the (nanny mi;ts that line the river, or it was not fishing time. We ljpieve Astoria has a bright future before it. location Is par excellent, steamers from all part of the world can 'and at her pates; the fishing indus try 13 bound 'a'jMi. s to be an important an well as paying: business; back of her Is a land rich In eoll and as product'-ve of as fine timber as Is to be found In the world, and when her new railroad to comp'jeted her attractions as a commer diail center, summer resort and p'.ace of Homes wM be tripled. Therefore lot evfry citizen keep Wis thoufder to the wheel, push fonward In every line of Improvement, car .the track of ell blocks that Impede progress, work for the good of the city first, la t and all the time; keep awake and avoid all idle dreaming, and in the near future he wfJ live In a city that will etand second to none for its thrift, enterprise and pros perity. It Is claimed that when these are moistened they can be woven much more readily than straw, and moke a durable hat. The Inventor says the sub stance Is lighter in weight than straw, and that because of the easier manipu lation and lower cost it will supersede the straw now used for headgear. The race of the Beechers represent genius and longevity, the latter, perhaps, in a higher degree than any other cele bratedl AmeVlcan family. The Rev. Ed ward (Beecher, who died in Brooklyn on Sunday, reached the highest point In k years of any of the family, being wen turned Into the last decade of the cen tury. Five of them still survive, all In advanced years, such as their venerable progenitor reached, who was between eighty and ninety at his death. For some of them the century mark may be re served, but however this may be, In the tables of longevity the family takes a high and notable rank, as it does in the line of its various and distinguished achievements. The Gladstone family, In England, is comparable with it in bot 1 partlcutars, but such descents are not numerous anywhere, and aro deserving of the honor and celebration which neither of these has failed to win.
