One Oi dose. HE 'AGRE'CTD WITH HER. Albuny State. A witty and popular New York clergy man, whom everybody knows by repu tation, had a iauirhable and at the same time unpleapant experience recently. One Sunday not long airo he was going up tho steps of his Fltfh avenue church when he was asked by an old lady (who of course did not know him) to help her up the steps. With his usual' court.y grace he com.pHed with her request. On reaching the top steps she halted breath- U'es'ly and asked htm who was going to preach: that day. "The Rev. Mr. Blank," he rcp'.led, giv ing his own name. "Oh, Lord!" exclaimed the od lady; "(Hp mo down again. I'd rather listen to a man sharpening a saw. Please help me down again. 1 reckon I won't go In." The clergyman smiled and gently assist ed iher down the stairs again, remarking as he reached the sidewalk: "I wouldn't go In either If I wasn't paid for It. A touching Incident at the funeral of the late Prof. Larar ot-curred after most of the friends bad left the rooms. The services were 'held In the apartments ('-t Mrs. I.asar at the Hotel St. George. Op posite the casket stood the professor's piano open, and on the rest above the keys, there wa. an open hymn book, dis playing the pane of the profeasor's favor ite hymn, "Asleep In Jesus," to the old cliMxIc tune, "Breslttn." Tho Rev. Dr. Charles Cuthbeit Hal'., pastor of the Flirft Prejbyterlnn church, who had as sisted tho two Eplreopal rectors o.t the service, remained behind, speaking words pf comfort to the family. Before the un dertaker screwed down the casket lid, Dr. Hul". took up the open hymn book from the piano rest, and after placing It between somo beautiful lilies, he laid It Ki ntly nt'the side of the dead musician. The book woa burled with the professor. Dr. HaS was at one time associated with Prof. Laxar In the work of compiling a hymn 'book. One little squeeze, and I sweetly ppoke; dtosy and fair was my cheok. Now my head lies In a corner far, My body lies here In the other; And If this Is what human children are, I never will livo with another! I am the book that Nancy read For fifteen minutes together; -Now I am standing here on my head, While she's gone to look at the weather. ISy leaves are crushed In the crueiest way There's jam on my opening page; And I wouPl not live with Miss Nancy Gay, Though, I shouldn't be read for an age! I am the frock that Nancy wore Last right at her birthday feast. 1 am the frock that Nancy tore In seventeen places at least. My buttons are scattering far and near, My trimming Is torn to rags; . And If I were Miss Nancy's mother dear I'd dress her In calico bags. We are the words that Nancy said When these things were brought to her view. AH of us ought to be painted red, And some of us are not tr jo. We splutter and mutter an snarl and snap, We smolder and smoke and blaze; And If she'd not meet with some sad mis hap, Mies Nancy must mend her ways.
