Astoria, Sept. 5th, 1805 To the Editor: Being lately requested by numerous patrons or the Cedar Street School dur. Ing the hurt year to ventilate facts con nected with the election of teachers in Astoria In tho June of 1891, Is my excuse Tcr asKing space at t'hls time. There was nwer a time in the history of that school that it stood higher, or was more appreciated, than at the closing of the school year of 1894. Many patrons and friends will remember tho hearty con gratulations both teachers and pupils re ceived at the closing exercls;s, several going so far as to say that the Cedar Street School was the best In the city. I did not get word of being dropped until the last of June, hence getting another regular nosltlon for the followlnor venr Was tUtai.iy out of tho question, so that the injury was the greatest that could possibly 'have been Inflicted. On coming to Astoria to see about the came, to say that I found thn patrons of the Cedar Street School disgusted, is putting It mildly. The first director I approached, after some hesitation, informed me that the primary teacher had trouble. I asked him What that bad to do with me. He replied, 'The principal is the school." The next director also gave the Fame reason, and I again ventured the same question, and for reply received1 a laugh that was very convincing. The other two directors not being woll enough posted to knew I'hat the principal of a . school Is fo be held 'personally responsible for private affairs of his assistants, and not having a good, long-eared laugh teady, had nothing to say, and seemed surprised that they should be approached on the subject. Ono of them, kindly offered me a "good recommend;" this I as kindly le- fused', as I like "recommends" to mean something. 1 could by this time appre ciate the position of some patrons who had asked some of the members of the board for an explanation of the matter, but could not find anyone who knew anything about it. As Mr. Dickinson, who voted for me, was kept in total Ig norance of the "hidden things of dis honesty," and was so disgusted by the methods used that It was only by earnest solicitations of his friends that he was Itept from resigning, I had to seek Infor mation from other sources than ihe board. I first learned that, before the election, the school clerk said to Miss Dleklnsm, that there was a great amount ot Jeal ousy -existing against the Cedar Sti'e?t School, and naked her If It would not be a good plan to tako some teachers out of the Cedar Street and put th:n in the Court Street School, and put some Court street teachers In Cedar Street. I next learned that Just after election, the clerk said to Mr. Dickinson that he Was afraliT that Prof. Hnwes would not bo elected, bs Messrs. Conn mid Thompson were i always opposed to him and were only In the county court, Tuesday, Septem ber 3rd, 1805 (Monday being a legal holi day), Wt day of term. Present, Hon. J. H. D. Gray, Judge; R. I or Au,slrst' lsi-2i- J- w- "a, sheriff, These statements surprised m?, as my relations with 'Hu'se directors always seemed to be of a pleasant nature, be sides, directors ought to tie equally inter ested In all the schools of the city. But the explanation came at last. I learned during the Inst Christmas holldnys that in a meeting of the Court Street teachers before the election ot tetchrs In 1S93, trav. .'.ing expenses, etc., $3.73. J. C. Clinton, trip to LeU-is & Clarke, serving papers, $4.30. Geo. Stevens, trip to Bear Cretk, serving papers, $6.00. A. R. Cy rus, serving papers at Westport, $4.50. Mrs. Schro- the principal of that srtinot openly stated ! dr10'!; Alr3' Sand'' 100: A- Sorg-lund, that If he bad any influenca with the board, Prof. Hawes would not be re elected. I am at liberty to use the name of my authority If this statement is dis puted. It was now perfectly plain whre the jealousy, existed, and why the op position of these directors was so mani fest. The election of 1893 was quite soon after t'he consolidation of the districts, besides It would not look well for the three directors living outside of the Ce dar Street district to dictate the principal over tho votes of the two who lived In It, consequently the dropping was post poned then. In 1S94. these men had Mr. Dealy where they could coerce him. Mr. D, Is on the board to keep his own fam ily In positions. To accomplish this, he would vote to drop every oilier teacher In the city and elect Fie ghost of Cruioe's man Friday principal of any school In uhlch he had the power. Theie dlre?tors were to give Mr. Dealy's daughters posi tions. In return for which he was to vote to change the principal of the Cedar Street school, and also do any other voting t'he directors, who wore a'ways rpposed to Prof. Hawes. rtioul'l dictate. These are the simple facts ot the un manly affair. The Astoria peiple can draw their own conclusions. Why can not Astoria have a board of ulir.'c'.ors $10.00, ahowar.ee for August.
