The Gardiner City left up for Portland yesterday to load lumber. Tho Manzanlta will blow down boilers In a few days and be given a general overhauling. The num'ber of pcop'.e who fish from the wharves every day for the sweet and enticing torn cod seems to be on the in crease. All of them manage to take home large catches. The British bark Erussels arrived in from Newcastle," New South Wales, yes terday with a partial cargo of coal. She Is 75 days out and Capcain Atsop, her Skipper, reports favoralble weather and uneventful voyage. The steamer Signal will leave for Port land this afternoon. She has nearly com pleted the discharge ot 400 tons of coal and 00 tons of Oriental freight. There Is one Chinaman aboard for this city. The balance, eight in numbjr, are bound for Tortland. The Columbine yesterday morning took fifteen tone of coal out to th3 lightship but the sea was so rou?h that Captain rtichardson found it Impossible to dis charge his cargo, and returned home again. Another attempt will be made to put It alboard today. A report from Northern British Colum bia says: Tho Alaskan salmon pack this year will be away ahead of last year, but while one cannery Is booming another Is comparatively quiet. The Loring cannery expects to put up 33,000 cases, or 8,009 more than last year. The four-masted British bark Brumulr 1708 tons, Captain Withers, arrived in port yesterday afternoon from Newcas tle, N. S. W. She has a full cargo and will go up to Portland today to discharge. Htr trip from port to port took G4 days, a fast passage, for this time of year. A Columbia river fisherman had his boat and gear burnt up while on board the I. R. & N. train last Friday. He was transferring his outfit to the bay for fall fishing. The boat was on a flat car anj sparks from the engine caught In it. Both the boat and his net ware new. They were a complete loss. South Bend Journal. It is stated In regard to the new mon ster sailing ship Potosi, recently launched at Hamburg, that some difficulty was en countered when it cam to distinguish be tween the five masts. It wis finally de cided to call the one In the bow the foremast, and then, following aft, they were called the greatmast, the middle mast, the crossmast and the besanmast. Similar German names were Invented for other parts of the brig. A report from Sidney, Cajie Breton, N. S says: "The fishing Industry, which means nearly everything to a great num ber of our people, Is very poor this sea son. At almost all the Ashing places the fish are reported very scare. This, with the very low price which Is being offered this year, makes it exceedingly 'hard for our fishermen. The bait which has been so Bcarce all along is, however, becoming more plentiful, and It is to ba hoped that the fishing will Improve." Tho durability of wet timber Is some thing remarkable. Recently, according to a Vienna paper, one of the piles sup porting the bridge built across the Dan ube by the Emperor Trajan was taken up. Although driven seventeen centuries ago, It showed no change, except that it was petrified to the depth of three quarters of an inch. The chestnut, beech, elm and oak piles on which stand the Savoy palace, London, are undeeayed. They were put in place In the latter part of the thirteenth century. Talking the mileage of coaat in connec tion with leading lights, tne Nether lands supplies one lighthouse for . every nine miles of coast; England, France and Denmark, one lighthouse for every l!i miles of coast; Ireland one lighthouse for every 16 miles of coast; Scotland one lighthouse for every 19 miles of coast; Germany one lighthouse for every 20 miles of coast; Norway and Sweden one lightbouse for every 25 miles of coast. Scotland is therefore worse off than Ire land by 18 per cent and worse oft than England by BS per cent in the matter of the provision of lighthouses. Mr. Paul E. Stevenson, of Kennebunk poit, Me., thinks that Captain Campbell, of the British ship Drumalis, recently at 'Frisco, was not the original Inventor of trlancular courses He writes to the Marine Journal: "From my personal experience I should say that others have an equal right to be considered the In ventors. Last year I was a passenger on the British ship Bangalore, on a voyage to Calcutta, and we bent a cross jack and I think a main sail of the Fame cut as the sails you speak of, while run ning down our easting In the southern ocean. The Bangalore's master ensured me that he had used tri.1ngul.1r courses for many voyages. During the passage referred to above they certainly were very successful." The American Shipbuilder, an an edi torial in its issue of July J5 complains of the lack of luxuries and necessaries fur nished to travelers on all the English trano-Atlantlc steamship llnou, and says: "We are not sure whether the standard of service has been malnt lined, but a few years ago the American steamers running between San Francisco and Hongkong were far superior to any of the English craft which no'V- ply across the Atlantic ocean, In all that apper tains to the comfort and pleasure of the passenger. There was a greater var Uty and better quality of food, with an Infinitely superior table service, making it easy for even a fastidious person to content himself withv simple steamer fare." Not the least Interesting of the craft which ply the waters of Pugct sound is the steamer Otter, which Is a country corner store afloat. Khe carrlos every thing to be found In a large and well stocked general merchan Use establish ment. Once In two weeks she makes the round trip. Capt. R. G. Brown, who Is manager, and half owner of the enter prise, says that be always endeavors to be at the precise spot at the precise hour r.r.ce In a fortnlzht. Small towns and ranches along the Sound shores are visit ed. Capt. Brown adds that there ts not another boat Uke the Otter or with a Is Dhe atrongest and be9t managed life Insurance company on the face of the earth. Our rates are no higher than onli' ers, for the same kind of a policy, and our contract Is so much mora liberal to the Unsurer that you cannot afford to take anything else but an Equitable pot Icy. Irresponsible travelling agents will misrepresent facts to you by trying to make you befllev that what tbey nave Is Just as good as the Equirable. By consulting the Insurance commissioner's reports you will discover the falsehood. There is no company, "Just as good." The Equitable Is now and has been for fifteen years past THE best. L. Samuel, Eugne Samuel, special agents. similar mission on the Pacific coast. There was a small steamer at one time on the Columbia river which carried a stock of general merchandise, but It has been abandoned. The Otter has now entered upon her fourth year as a float ing store. As to the business outlook, Capt. Brown say;! "People have more money und do more trading. Our business is far ahead of what we did last sum mer." Spokesman. The Tnakle Register of Seattle says: "Halibut are plentiful, some large catches having arrived here this week. They are reported scarce on the banks, and' the fleet has to go to the far north. The salmon market Is In a healthy condition. Hoods Canal and Skagit and Stlllagua mlsb. rivers are furnishing salmon for export, while the festive humpback, caught In Elliott bay and contiguous waters, is used by the cannery. Ship ments of sulmon to the fur east have fallen oft though lack of orders, but trade with the - middle and southern states keeps up. Offerings ot salmon from Gray's Harbor country have been made to this market. The oyster end crab trade Is picking up, and shipments to outside points are Increasing In size and numbers." The great progress made In wrecking appliances and their operation during the past ten years, is shown In the successful floating of the steamship Nerlto, which went on Sable Island last September and was totally abandoned. So certain were the underwriters that the ship would go to pieces on the sands and prove a total wreck, that all Insurance claims on tho steamer and cargo wore settled within a short time after the disaster, and the Nerlto's name removed from the registers. The Merrltt Wrecking Com pany, after an examination ot tho strand ed vessel, decided that wltn a new sys tem of pumps the company has lately perfected, the Nerlto could be floated. An arrangement was maido with Lloyd's agents whereby the agents were to re ceive 75 per cent of the steamer's value In the event of their bringing her to port. Some weeks ago operations were com menced, the company's powerful wreck ing steamer, J. D. Jones, being employed in tho work. The result Is that the Nen- lto has been towed Into Halifax bythe Jones, and after partial repairs will be taken to New York. The Nerlto Is nearly 3,000 tons gross, and Is practically a new vessel, having been built at Sunderland in 1S1. This Is the first instance on record where a ship once touching the dreaded sands of Sable island has ever again seen service. SUMMER SCHEDULE OF THE O. R. & N. STEAMERS. T. J. Potter.
