The era of marine teleeranhy seems to have created a new taste in the minute organisms known as the "grlbble." This little creature has developed a liking for tne telegraphic insulating materials. Just as larger animals have acquired a taste for bananas. They find their way In be tween the sheathing of strong Iron wire and tat through everything in the way of Insulating material till they get to the copper strands, when, of course, the wa ter destroys the conducting power of the cable. To. prevent the ravages of this tiny creature, 6ays the London Daily News, the five insulated copper wires constituting the core of the cable, laid across from Portpatrlck to Donaghtdee. have been Incased in a sheathing of brass, which is wound around them in the form of a thin metal tape. The brass is an effectual barrier so far, but whether these little denizens of the deep may not by and by find even metal tape an addi tion to their diet remains to be seen. It Is said the government intends first of all to extend navigation to Corea, China and Formosa, opening regular services to Fusan, Jlnsen, Taillenwau and Klngkou on the north, and to Shanghai, Hongkong and Formosa on the south. New lines to the Chinese ports to be opened by the new treaty will also be Inaugurated. Then a line to Australia will be opened, and two or three large steamers such, as the Tosa Maru or Kagshl Maru, will regu larly run on It. The chartered steamers now applied to the service to Hongkong and Vladivostock will be replaced by the company's own steamers.
