The pilot echooner San Joss will pro ceed to aea at the end of tfhe present month. A thick fog and emoky atmosphere bung over the inouWi vt lho river all day yes terday. The flchoonier Huenerne, lumber laden, for Redondo, came dwn the river from Portland yesterday. She .will leave out today. The steamer State of California eame in at 11 o'clock yesteirday morningr from Sin ;FranclscJ, and deft up the river for Portland at noon. She had' very few pas sengers aboard. The spreader of the lady Madge was tiroken yesterday and will have to be lepalred before 6ihe can be put on a trial run. The owner of the yacht was busily engaged rigging her up all day. The tug iboat Gen. Wright, finished the work of surveying Che bar and bay of this port, that was ordered by the engin eers, who recently met here, and left for Coos Bay. The survey has developed many usetful facts heretofore undiscover ed, Wio,t 'will be of TOUdh beneflt to the future development of thle place. Records .The new marine hospital at Port Town rend, the building of which was begun shortly after the old one was destroyed by lire, Is now nearly completed. The. new ireiitmion will be fitted with every convenience and finished In a substantial manner. It is expected that toe building will te ready forbecupancy within the ensuing 30 days. The steamer tSate of California, Which arrived yesterday from Portland and As uur.a, says tihe Chronicle, 'had her first assltant engineer in charge of her en gines. Chief Engineer Kress came down from Portland overland to attend the fu neral of his son. The latter was, only 19 years old and died from, appendicitis. He was very well known, here and (highly esteemed. The American, barkentlne Gleaner Is out 91 days from the nitrate ports bound for San Francisco. The average voyage is about 65 days, and the coasting vessels surely provide for a longer passage. While no fears are expressed for the Gleaner's safety, seafaring moa are of the opinion that the crew will be kept on very short rations, if not actually starved, unless some good Samaritan ship bears down on them. Not since 1868, so the pioneers say, has so much smoke hung over the city as at the present time. It has darkened the eky for a week, has interfered somewhat with navigation on the Sound, and bas been an annoyance to every one. Forest fires in thd mountains and along the Sound, as usual, are the cause of much smoke. A westerly wind springing up last evening indicated thajt the smoka is not to prevail much longer. Ledger. Captain Lawrence is especially proud of the boys at the Long Beach life saving station, and we all are for that matter, says the South Bend Herald, for they observe most excellent discipline, and are prize winners In action. Last week the United tSates Inspector of tfia service stayed over night at the station, aad, after all but those on duty were Bound esleep, he rang a fire alarm to see how the boys would respond. They were out, and had tine water pouring on the roof of tihe" station house in two and one-half minutes. The West Coast Trade makes the fol lowing comment on the possibility of log rafts being floated from Puget Sound. "The big log raft reached San Francisco In safety, which means, of course, that the experiment will be repeated probably next season, and It is announced that ruyet Sound will be the point of opera tions. The logs cut on Puget Sound should be cut by our own milling con cerns, and iviiipped out as lumbar or fin ished producle, not towed out In great rafts, to stand as a menace to the ship ping along the coast under most favora ble circumstances, and standing a chance of sending valuable property and human lives to tho bottom of the ocean, in order that the Southern Pacific or some other corporation may save a few dollars in freight for vessels. The experiment . Is not looked upon with favor either by mill men or the, shipping iotererts."1 Through a misunderstanding of signals the steamer Homer Is on the beach near Coos Bay, with a wide hole in ber side. She was bound out of tie bay with, a cargo of coal for Spreckles, of San Fran cisco, and was passing Marshfleld when the Arago, a steel steamer operated by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company, came in sight, headed up Hie bay. The vessels exchanged signals to pass accord ing to the code, but thers seems to have been some misunderstanding, and the tws steamers came together. Captain Reed, of the Arago, says c exchanged signals with the Homer to pis 3 on the starboard side, but that the Homer, when only a short distance away, cut across bis bows without giving any warning. Before the Arago's headway could be stopped, she had plunged ber sharp bow deep into the side of the coal laden vessel. The Ho mer began leaking badly and to keep iter from sinkbrg she was run on the beach. THE EQUITABLE LIFE OF NEW YORK Is tihe strongest and best managed Ufa insurance company on the face of (he earth. Our rates are no higher than otih ers, for tflie same kind of a policy, and our contract is so much more liberal to tihe insurer thai you cannot afford to take anything else bud an Equitable pol icy. Irresponsible travelling agents will mi3rwiresen,t facts to you by trying to make you believe that what they have is Just as good as the Equitable. By consulting the Insurance commissioner's reports you will discover the falsehood. There is no company, "Just as good." The Equitable is now and has been for fifteen years past THE best. L. Samuel, Eugeoie Saimuel, special agents. The Arago was not injured, but the Ho mer will require extensive repairs. (According to a letter received from Una l&doa, seal life in Bering sea Is being de stroyed very fast by the vessels engaged In taking seals outside of the sixty-mile sone. "In e. very short time," says the letter, "there will be so seals to protect In American waters, unless some means tan be reached to prohibit the tea! fish ing by sea. There are Ash in Bering sea to supply the world, Including cod, hali but and salmon. The vessels at anchor in Unalaska harbor July 14 were tihe four whaling barks California, Lydia, Ander 'son (Hicks land Alice Knowies; British sealing schooners Triumph, Penelope, Te vest, Sapphire, Saucy "Lass, Alary Bell and Jessie. The British cruiser Pheasant was also in that port cleaning boilers. The coal laden Ibark Sonoma sailed for the north early in. the month. The American trading schooner Crystal, of Tacoma, ar rived at Kadlak July 16, with all well on board. American schooners Seventy six and Olga, iwere fallen lp with at sea July 16, with ell well. The Seventy-Six had twenty-nine otter skins and the Olga eighteen. AN ADVANCE IN RATES. The Western classification comimlttee, at a recent meeting ini Ohio ago, decided upon radical changes in the rates, weights and classification of about 106 commodi ties. The schedule of reductions in min imum weights, submitted to the Western lines by the Milwaukee, provided for a re duction in the carload weight of nearly 400 articles. The classification committee, which includes all the roads between Chi cago and the Paclflo coast, agreed to lower the minimum carload weights of about 100 articles, but to compensate the railroads for the loss of revenue this would occasion, it was resolved to ad vance the rates of nearly every commod ity which is to take a lower carload weight.
