Weeks of the whaler Thre3h;r, was Injured by a full and died March 29 aboard his vessel at Hereschel island. He was one of the best known whaling masters on this coast and had numerous friends here and in Portland. The f oirr-masted schooner William Boiw- den, Capt. K. FJerem, which has loaded &00.000 feet of lumber at Port Blakely, cleared Thursday at the Tacoma customs office for Port Plrle, Australia. The tim bers were loaded very quickly, as in the Port Plrle mines Ibut certain sizes ana lengths are used. The schooner Vine, which was built by Captain Burns, of Seattle, has been char tered by CaJDtaln Gllmore, who will take a cargo of lumber- with (her from Ta cama to San Diego, after iwhlch she will go on the ways at Port Blakely and be lengthened about forty feet ana con verted into a three-'masted schooner. Th first class unarmed: cruiser Power ful, a sister of the Terrible, was launched at Barrow on Wednesday. Tne new cruiser will toe much larger and greater displacement than any other vessel Here tofore built by any nation. The Russian cruiser Rossi, now In course .of con struction, iwhlch will have a displccemont of over 12,000 tons, probably comes sec ond. The Dutch bark Van Galen arrived at Vancouver last Wednesday, 115 days from Java, with 2,r.:0 tons raw sugar for the refiner at that place. Jnis cargi was much needed and mill krep the refinery in operation for some time. Another ship has been engaged to follow. As soon as discharged the Van Galen will load canned salmon at Victoria for Liverpool or London. The run of fish yesterday was excep tionally good, both the seiners and boat men doing well. At the Fishermen's Packing Company, seven tons were put In from Oliver's seining grounds. The total average of gill netters Is about 19 to 20, the inside river boats having the best of it, thelr'average being between 20 and 25 to the boat. All the canneries worked quite late last night, It bslng nearly 10 o'clock before they were clean ed up. .The run of fish Is expected to last at least three days. A letter received yesterday by a prom Inent merchant of this city says that the cannery vessels bound for Bering sea were detained over a month. In all It took some 65 days to make the trip. Sev eral of the vessels were caught by Ice fields and kept there for a period of days.' The letter also states that there is more Ice than ever before and that the trip was the longest (for many years past. During the winter the cannery owned by Captain Chas. Johnson and John Lundberg was destroyed .by lire. The sailing vessel B. (P. Cheney, Cap tain Harriman, went to sea yesterday with 2.168 tons of South Prairie coal for Ban Francisco, says the Tacoma Ledger, Beifore leaving her captain had some trouble with a few members of the crew, but came off victorious. The sailors made an attempt to recover their wages, con- testine the legality of some or tne snip ping articles. They were beaten in this regard, it being proven they had not lived up to the agreements they had made In the articles they had1 signed. Then they complained the vessel was unsea- worthy. Under the OTdit- or tne. court Harbor Master Cllft, Capt. De Laiio and Capt. Anderson conducted a survey yes terday and pronounced the vessel sea worthy in every respect. Accordingly she was allowed to sail. Captain Grounds, late of the Skagit Chief, but who is now engaged in the ship building and repairing business at Ballard, was in Tacoma yesterday, says the Ledger. Hauled out on the ways at Ballard are the steamers Eliza Anderson, Menwln, City of Qplncey, -and Daisy, all owned by the Puget Sound & Alaska Steamship company. They are being put in gd repair and will soon be brought to Tacoma. All the vessels named ore pioneers and once were prominent in Sound shipping. .The old Eliza Anderson Is the mother of the fleet. She was built on the Columbia, river by Captain Grounds' father in 1858-69 and has been In service almost continuously since. Capt. Grounds says she Is In an excellent state of preservation and that her bot tom is as firm and sound as if but ten years old. , Freight competition 'between tCie dlffer nt Oriental steamship lines is becoming keener than ever. It was thought a short time ago that the lowest limit for carry ing flour to the Orient from Pacific coast points had been reached, but the rates have dropped still lower to a level where profits seem altogether out of the ques tion. When It was announced some time ago that flout would be carried to the Orient for M a ton there was much rpecu l.itlon amyr.g shipping men as to the probable effect of the cut. There will be. more, however, now that the rate has been cut down half. Th Northern Pacific Steamship company on Wednes day set the X2 rate, and iwith Immense cargo ships expect to at least hold their own with the other companies. Flour is now the principal freight carried by each of the Oriental lines. The schooner Helen K. Kimball, 1S3 tons register by government measure ment, sailed from Puget sound for Max atlan, and from ihe latltud? of fr'an Francisco to destination was butten days making the run. She returned frcm Tr.r.olobampo bay and was only 27 days getting to Sin Francisco, showing s "ciean pair of heels." Her good sailing qualities, however, did not serve her whll in lfx!co. Whether for the benefit of the Individual peckeo or the republic's treasury will probably never be known, tout the cus toms authorities refused to take Uncle Barn's olllclal certificates that the vessel registered 183 tons, measured her to suit their own requirements and tacked on 90 tons more, making the dues $000. This could not be Obviated, so It was paid. Of course It was in the depreciated Mexi can money, but it was an arbltrtary tax that the owners paid without any kindly feeling toward "our sister republic." In referring . to the White Star line steamer Oceanic upon her recent return to her home port of Liverpool, after run ning for fifteen years across the Pacific under charter to the O. & O. S. 8. Co., the National Magazine makes the proud, but justifiable boast, that this ship In her fifteen years service has hardly damaged a ton of cargo, lost a bout or damaged herself In any manner. The Oceanic after tiwenty-flve years' Atlantic and Pacific service Is at the yard of her builders, Hariand & Wolff, receiving new boilers and a general overhauling, Captain Smltlh, iher commander for years, can well feel proud of his vessel's record, as ca his predecessor, Captain Motcalfe, now Lloyd's surveyor at San Francisco. The light house inspector of the San Fnanclsco and North California district has received word that a small slooj of aujui iu ions raan rrancisco naa been wrecked on New Year Island early last Tuesday morning. It has been found best ito change the time of the Bible School from tihe re vised circular published belaw, and it will be opon on 'Wednesday, August 7th. The work this year will be confined strictly to Bible study, conference and song, as awing to tihe fact of the normal school being in session at the same time public lectures and addresses are deemed Inadvisable. Each one should bring Bi ble, note book and pencil, Portland, Or., July 20, 1895. Dear Friend: We find in many direc tions a growing desire for a better knowl edge of the Bible, and some are asking why we cannot have a Summer School for Bible study patterned ' after Moody's Nort'hilevd School, and the Summer Con ferences at Lake Geneva. Because of the urgent need and at the request of many friends we purpose to give our time and services in an effort to establish such a Conference of Christians, and send you this letter to urge your co operation ana support. It is proposed to hold the first gathering from Wednesday, August Tun to Wed nesday, August 21st, at Gearhart Park The proprietors of that delightful seaside resort have generously offered the free use of the auditorium (seating 600) and free camping ground.. As this school Is at the same time as the "Sutrime.r Normal Sdhool," alt the special provisions for that gathering in the way of cheap excursion rates, restau rant accommodations, etc., could be tak en advantage of and utilized. The Bible classes will be conducted daily. Exangellstlc meetings and attract' lve Sabbath services will be held each Sunday calculated to draw in those from the surrounding neighborhoods. The ' music will be in charge of Mr t ranK Dickson, and will be made a marked feature. Membership for the first yjar, admitting to all privileges, is fixed at $1.00 (no charge for young children), the money to be used in advertising and paying travelling expenses. No salaries are to be paid any one. Can we count on your support and assistance in this effort? Extract taken from the New York "Mu&lcal Journal" as follows: As a mut ter of fact it la by far better that a purchaser of a piano or organ should deal with the local music house of reputation and standing in the community or stats, and as a matter of fact the purchaser can usually buy (in these times of sharp competition) a piano or organ at a margin so close as to yield satisfaction to both purchaser and seller. The actual repre sentatives are located or.Jy In the larxnt cities, and even the rejjiesentatives come unaer the same burden of expenses, such as rent, light, clerk hire, advertising and sundries, tin at go to make ud the cost of sending, which has to be bjrne by tne dealer.
