OREGON'S OPPORTUNITIES.
A late telegram from Chicago says:
"Strawberries as big as good sized wal
nuts, p.cked from the vines at Seattle,
Wash., have arrived In this city and
were placed on the market. It is the
first instance In the history of the trade
thut berries grown in sight of She Pa
cilia ocean have been brought to Chlcag
and placed alongside of berries from the
Empire state. It was considered on
South Water street as an added evidence
of the importance Chicago is attaining
as u, fruit distributing center for the en
tire country. The strawberries came con
signed to Joseph Spies & Co. In one of
Armour's refp.gerator cars, packed in
five-quart boxes, Sixty boxes to the case,
and 460 boxes to a car. The berries were
the largest ever seen here,. some ot them
being over an Inch In diameter. The
flavor and density are excellent. Part of
the fruit was a trifle over-ripe, but the
majority of ft was lit fine condition, fully
Justifying the experiment of the ship
ment. Every twelve hours during the
transit fixsft ice was placed In the car.
The reign t rate was J3S0, and, taking into
consideration the value of the berries,
the risk was heavy. Representative of
the leading 'hotels, restaurants, and fancy
grocery bouses, who had been notified
of the arrival, took the fruit readily at
prices varying from $3 to lit a case, or
' from Ave to lit teen cents a quart. Seattle
shipper were notified of the successful
outcome of their 'Venture, and expressed
hearty satisfaction."
As usual, our sister state takes the
lead in a business enterprise that bids
fair in the next few years to assume
extraordinary proportions, and we cannot
help admiring the ever present spirit
ot commercial activity that exists In
Ml the larger cities of Washington, Ore
gon's fruit growers should wake up to
the situation without Jarring their nerves
by too rough a shock of suddenly ac
quired activity. They Ihave the means
of transportation right at their doors,
and, more than that, the quality of fruit
they produce is far superior in every way
to iny grown In either California or
Washington. Oregon's apples are already
famous all over the country, but the
small fruits cherries, strawberries and
raspberries in particular, are practically
unknown. This should not be so. It only
needs a few advance shipments of care
fully selected and carefully packed goods
to crealte am Immediate demand from
all the eastern and middle west centres.
The quality of the fruit will do the rest,
and year after year the growers of this
state will have a rapidly increasing mar
ket, and tts natural sequence rapidly In
creasing Incomes. The deep, black
loamed land In Oregon suitable for fruit
growing that has as yet never bean
turned over Iby the hand ot man, would
support thousands of New England
homesteaders, to whom the productive'
nees of the soil would be a. revelation.
And turning from this subject of fruit
exporting, it seems that with the advent
of our Astoria railroad a great and pro
fitable business in void stor'age fish is
bound to spring up In this city. It will
be a very few years before thousands
of f rosea fresh Columbia river salmon
Will be forwarded to Chicago, St. Louis,
Philadelphia, New York, and many other
for away cities, and exposed for Sal on
Ash stands of the Eastern centers In as
good condition as they can bo obtained
by tho people of Astoria, Imagine

tally marketing operations, stopping to
choose for her evening meal between

Verily, the world ts moving. In Van
couver the other day they gave a dinner
when the guests ate fresh and Juicy
Australian mutton, Australian cabbage,
and cauliflower, and finished up the meal
with grapes and peaches picked sixteen
thousand mlhs away.

profusely? As for rum, It is colored
with prunes or with tar, and savjr is
given by adding the raspings of tanned

find aloes, gentian, centaury and ox bile.

The French people are certainly little
short of geniuses In this line, and they
take good care to let this country have
a t'ht&nce to see how. much of a fine art
they cUn make adulteration. For almost
nothing you can have a superb box of
tinned lobsters,, but In, the sheet Iron
boxes that you buy you will only find
cuttle fltfh. Tainted salmon, .trout and
other "denizens of the sea" are em
balmed by Injecting into them salts or
nc. The scales are made frsh again
ty rubbing them with vaseline, and the
fins Iby rubbing them with fresh, blood.
Gingerbread has for base potassium of
soap, cream has vaseline added and is
guaranteed to never spoil, fend there are
plenty of preserves into which not one
bit of fruit has ever entered of which
they bear the, name. Take a quantity of
glucose, mix with It sulphuric acid or
amldon, give it flavor with special eth
ers, cover the whole with a fine label,
and gain a respectable and respected for
tune. In chicory, the coffee of the poor,
Is found the raspings of carrots, of beans,
of glands, of torrined bread, of beet
pulp, of brick dust, and of ochre.
Commissioner Finley, of the Southern
Railway and Steamship Association, has
announced exposition rates for all lines
between tho Ohio and Potomac and the
Gulf ,and between the Atlantic and the
Mississippi river. The basis is approxi
mately one cent a mile, slightly more
than one-half of the basis named for the
World's Fair by the passenger associa
tion which met at Chicago in 1893. For
example, the round trip rate from At
lanta to Chicago was $32. The round
trip rate from Chicago to Atlanta will
be about flT.GO; from Washington about
$14.30; from Cincinnati, $10.95; from Nash
ville about $6.50 and other points In pro
portion. This rate Is entirely satisfac
tory to the exposition company, and It
w.U be maintained to the end. While
rates have not been named for ' points
beyond the Ohio, Potomac, and Missis
sippi rivers, It is believed that railroads
beyond those lines will use the same ba
sis. The exposition opens at Atlanta,
Ga., September 18 -and closes October 1.
Mormon misBlonarleil are- vigorously
proselyting in California and other states.
But no one Is now alarmed over this any
more than over any other religious pro
paganda. Polygamy is not taught or
practised any more, and it would do no
good 1f it were taught. The "new wom
an" is too self-respecting to allow her
sollf to share with others that which
should be all her own. If she marry, she
demands an entire husband, not a frac
tion of one.
The first legislature under the Republic
of Hawaii has been convened. The pres
ident in his message favors annexation
to the United States and the construc
tion of a cable. We violate no confidence
In stating to Mr. Dole that there will be
no annexation, and no aid by the United
States government to the cable project,
so long as Orover Cleveland is president.
He Is too sore over Queen Lll's deposi
tion.
The old controversy has again, sprung
up as to wnetner tne unuea states -is-or

Reed is thinking about.
ANOTHER FREE SILVER FIZZLE.
After Dersls'tent weten&lon that the en
tire Democratic parity of Colorado was
wild for free silver, only thirty persons
-were present at the opening of the mass
convention ot Denver Tuesday. The at
tendance was slightly increased before
the elating session, but at no t.me
were the numbers impressive; while the
convention, Instead of being In united
frenzy, was eubjert to la severe cnin
by a letter from Frank ArbucKie, chair
man of the state central committee.
Mr. Arbuckle called tho meeting at the
request of the committee, but he declined
to be present it it. He advised against
the convention, and falling to induce a
majority of the committee to agree with
Urn, he submitted to the extent of ac
quiescing in thelf requcrt.
'I stand upon the "broad proposii-.on,
he satd, "that any amd all relief whicn
may come to the people of Colorado, as
woll as to the people of the United
States, must of necessity be -through
Democratic doctrine, and that ft is the
supreme duty of the Colorado Democracy
at this time to hold fast the respect, con
fidence and good iwlll of the national
Democracy by claiming allegiance and
devotion to its principles," Mr. Arbuekle
-added: "In my .opinion -the aclon or
the Illinois Democracy in passing resolu
tions of condemnation was lmpo'.-.tlo and
disgraceful. Such work is detrimental
to western Interests. It alienates sup
port -which should be maintained, and the
action cf said convention in electing dele
gates 'to a iW'tlonil convention, not culled
by authority of the national committee
Is a gross breach of political etiquette
and discipline. It is political anarchy."
Notwithstanding so wholesome an ad
monition the convention proceeded
throutfli the farce of "reatllrmlng Us de
votion to the principles of Jefferson and
Jackson," alleging the transparent un
tnfth -that the W.etory of the world's pro
duction proves -that the ratio of 16 to 1
has successfully maintained the parity
of the two metals,' and dissenting from
-the tlniinclal policy of the present admin
istration. It would have been Wise for Colorado
Democrat -to Wave accepted the shrewd
adv.ee ( Chairman Arbuekle, based, as
It obviously Is, upon the utter impossi
bility of free irilver fleeting a federal
government Independently of the other
rational parties, and the equal impossi
bility of securing in a national conven
tion of either endorsement of the free
liver fallacy.
A careiful survey of the electoral college
probabilities shows that U would lie im
possible to flntl B votes out ot 444 In
favor of free Silver. It will muke no
difference how the free silver votes may
be accredited! or distributed. Allowing
the most generous estimate, the largest
number on which fri silver can calcu
late Is 144.

Every additional meeting throughout
the country in behalf of an Impossible
theory, and in part of a dishonest manip
ulation of American currency, must be,

Michael Ontronoff, born in Jyskyjarwi
