reports fnm uli parts of the counnry been
so uniformly favorable. The daily aver
age of bank clearings In June is 24.8 per

per cent less than In 1892. The most
potent influence has been the receipt ot
more favorable advices rtgiairdl,ig grow

out of Dhe way, wages in many establish

now leading. There is a general im

draws near when the crop export will

Astoria, Ore. 10 p. n., 14th June, 1896.
Stocks continue to move away from the
river in a fairly satisfladbory manner and
at ali the larger canneries shipments are j
being made almost as1 fast as they are
placed In readiness for orders. The fea
ture of the week has been the lively de.
mand from extreme Easterni markets
which exceeds the orders from that sec-.
t.oh for any other year since 18s0. Sev
eral Southern centers also are showing
more than the usual interest in. canned
salmon,- and it looks as If a'thort-pack
and slightly increased demands would
hold prices up to a very satisfactory ng
ure up to the end of the season. New
York correspondents report a practically
empty market in Columbia river spring
fish, and very satisfactory Inquiry from
all the big grocery houses, lloston re
ports that Massachusetts buyers are
pushing orders fast. Omaha correspond
en ts ' all agree that the rise in canned
meats has had a beneficial effect on the
price of salmon in that centre, and the
demand is growing. In St. Paul salmon
is firm and aotlve, and four large orders
has been placed In the twin cit.es during

Columbia during the past seven days
have been fulr. From Saturday fc Wed
nesday inclusive the run was large and
steady, averaging 16 fish to the boat
every day, with fine weight at an avenge
of fuliiy 80 pounds. Dur.ng the last three
days, however, the catch has slackened
up considerably and today showed re
turns smaller than they have been for
soune weeks. Matters in the vicinity ot
the canneries along the middle Columbia
are siightly Improving and each of the
five canneries operating in that vicinity
. averaging 100 cases per day. Very lit
tie work is being done by the traps, but
the seining appliances are all showing
increased catches, and will no doubt con
tinue to do . well . till the close ot the
season. The canneries at The Dalles and
the Cascades are still quiet and though
the Increased seining returns have help
ed to make things move slowly, the up
r.ver pack Is a failure to the present
date. Biuebucks are beginning to ap
pear in the river In email quantities,
showing every day very gradual In
crease, and it has now been definitely
doteiimined that the blue-back oulput w.ll
not reach to anywhere near Its legitimate
figures, even for an off year, which this
undoubtedly is. Steelhead are begin
ning to arrive and there seems to be
every prospect of a very slack run of
this grade of salmon as well. The quality
of the Chlnooks continues most excellent
and the fish remain a deep red color,
with flekhjlrm and hard.

(MELfLOID, A NEW ALLOY.
The London Engineer, May 8, describes
a new alloy which has been brought out
by the Phosphor Bronze company, and
It Is said to Justify Its right to be called
new, by possessing qualities not previous
ly found In any of the bronzes.- K is
the Invention of the company s engineer,
Mr, Bull, already known as the Inventor
of Bull's metal. Melloid may be de
scribed as a malleable - bronze; It Is a
mixture of copper and tin, which Is en.
0.rely free from zinc, aluminum or iron,
and it differs from phosphor bronze, man
ganese bronze or Bull's metal, In being
tough and ductile at all temperatures.
Many descriptions of brass and bronze
can bs forged or welded, but Mr. Bull
states -that with all of them there Is a
temperature at which they become brittle.'
This may vary from 400 to 900 degrees
Fahr,, and when it is passed they again
become tenacious and malleable, if their
temperature be raised stJIL higher.
