Six thousand tons of shipping are now ln port. The O. R. and N. Co. shipped two car loads of salmon last night. The State of California should be up from San Francisco tomorrow. The new wheel for the steamer Iralda was shipped to Portland last night from the Dalglty Iron Works. The steamer Truckee discharged 25 tons of general cargo here before proceeding up the river to Portland. If he weather moderates today th Mendell will resume her sounding work at the mouth of the river tomorrow. A large stern-wheel steamer Is being loaded on a brig at San Francisco, piece by piece, to be taken to the Yukon river. The steamer Oregon left out for San Franolsco at daylight yesterday morning with a small freight list consisting prin cipally of oysters. None of the ships ln port moved from their anchorages yesterday, and the cap tains took the opportunity of spending a few more pleasant hours with friends. Nothing more has been heard of Willie Planting or his boat puller whose name Is now known to be Albert Kotajarvl. It Is now certain that both have been drowned. Louis Martin yesterday completed the new rudder stock for the San Jose and attached It to the rudder. It will be placed ln position aboard the schoontr tomorrow. The constant rain yesterday stopped all outdoor carpentering work and the Eclipse and several other small craft along the water front were left untouch ed ln consequence. The schooner Euneme came ln from Sin Francisco yesterday morning and tied up at Flnlayson's dock. After discharg ing ballast she will go up the river to load lumber for Redondo. The travel from Portland yesterday slackened up considerably. The passen ger list on the Potter and G-itzert togeth er did not exceed four people. And one of these was a tourist from Skamokawa. The Portland steamer Pilgrim went on the gridiron at the Astoria Iron Works yesterday morning. She will be over hauled thoroughly and is to have her rudder changed and repaired beCore she leaves up the river. Government barge No. 9 Is tied up at the Parker House dock. Yesterday car penters from Fort Stevens were busily en gaged placing in position a new rudder stock. She will be towd up to 'the barge anchorage this morning. , In spite of the Inclement weather a very large number of fish boats started down the river yesterday morning. Yesterday the returns at the cannerits were all very slack, the general average catch being seven to the boat. The Eize of the fish continues to Increase. The following vessels are now dua at Astoria, and with the winds now prevail ing, may ba looked for oft the mouth of the river at any moment: American ship James Drummond, 1749 tons, 123 dnyn from New York; British bark Gulf Stream, 1378 tons, 117 days from Calcutta. Captain Phil. Johnson can dock any ship In the stiffest gale of wind that ever blew, but he doesn't know enough about navigation ashore to steer clear ot tramps. Several of these gentlemen hive been visiting the harbormaster's resi dence lately, greatly to the aronoyancp of the family. All day yesterday the weather at the mouth of the river was very dirty. The wind which was guaged at 30 miles early ln the morning increased toward night, and at 8 o'clock was blowing 45 miles an hour. A great many flshboats were out In the thick of It, but no casuallties were reported up to a late hour. The steamer Edith brought down a large quantity of beautiful flowers from J. O. Megler's gardens at Brookfield y s terday. Pear blossoms and pansles form the bulk of the collection, and all tha crew sported fancy buttonholes, giving them more the appearance of Arcadian shepherds than prosaic workmen on a fish tender. The flowers were divided among Mr. Megler's friends. With a stiff northerly wind howling at the rate of 38 miles an hour, Captain Schrader, of the Harrison, dee'ded to wait over till today before starting the steamer out for the Nehalem. He .didn't seem to care about taking the chances of being blown up to Bering Sea ana getting arrested as a seal poacher. As he expressed It briefly yesterday morning, "I'm in a good place here, and, what's more, I know It" Discretion is the bet ter part of shipwreck. The revenue cutter Grant yesterday started from Tacoma for Bering Sea, car-l rylng the orders to the fleet made neces sary by England's change In her sealing regulations. Her boats and launches were kept busy all day getting the necessaries of life aboard for over fifty men. Ove t3,4O0 was expended for the trip, of whicn $1,200 was for stores, 11.900 for ship chan dlery, and $100 for cabin wardroom. She secured a new suit of storm sails. The cutter goes to Whatcom, and she will proceed at once for brlng Sea by way of Sitka, Alaska, where she will meet the Bear, Rush, Perry and Corwin. Th Wolcott is now at San Diego, but has or ders to start In ten days on the same trip. Bark Enoch Talbot, Captain Johnson, arrived in Tacoma on Tuesday night, 57 days from San Jose de Guatemala, in ballast to load lumber at the St. Paul and Tacoma Milt For the past seven months she has been having an exciting time. On the voyage south to Central America she encountered a hurricane off the coast of Mexico and was obliged to Jettison part of her cargo. Good seamanship on the part of her officers brought her Into port. On the return voyage from Ban Joss ao Guatemala at ons time rations were al most exhausted, and the officers and crew were put on short allowances. Just when the situation began to look serious the ship Speeke, from San Francisco for Antwerp, was spoken, and she gave the Talbot all the provisions she could spare. A few days later more food was gotten from the ship Sardonoine, en route from Calcutta to San Francisco. With these additional supplies the bark was enabled to reach Puget Sound. "Seaboard," of New York, says that a noticeable loss of the export trade Is beginning to be felt at that port. Consid erable comment, it appears, has attended the departure from there under tow and ln ballast of a British ship for Halifax, to load deals for Calcutta. A large number of vessels have also left New York recently ln ballast for deep water voyages. The British ships Forest Hall and Sulgate have sailed from this city to load wheat at 35 shillings a ton for the United Kingdom, or the continent. The British ship Clarendon is also bound on this errand from Boston to Astoria, and the ships Snlomene and Benlirlg have left New York In ballast for Newcastle, N. S. W., to load coal for San Francisco. Considering that wheat cargoes have besn taken from this coast to Europe for 17 shillings, it will be clear that the pres ent rate of 35 shillings is a strong at. traction. Fully one hundred million buEJhels of wheat will be shipped from the Columbia river and San Francisco this year. The San Francisco Chronicle says: "Not ln months have the wharves along the wa.ter front worn such a deserted ap pearance as at present. The front Is par. tlcularly bare of vessels, either loading or discharging. This Is said to be due In a large degree to the declaring off of the coast seamen's strike, and the large shipments of wheat. There are now but four deep-sea vessels ln port which ar disengaged, and the prospects are that they will be chartered within the next two or three days. The coasting business Is not at Its best, however, and many ot the smaller craft are accepting charters to carry sugar from the Hawaiian Is lands. The trouble with them Is that lumber Is cheap, and the market Is well supplied, and the same may be said ot coal, which Is always easy at this time of year. The reaction will set In, accord ing to Chief Wharfinger Boobar, early ln October. He predicts that the harbor will be overrun with ships at that time, and the rush is apt to continue all win ter. Business men say that the departure of the ships, all chartered, indicate a general revival of business, in view of the fact that, but a few months ago, the streim was crowded with vessels which could not get charters." A LAUGHABLE MISTAKE. Two ladles entered a book-store recent ly and the younger asked the clerk for a book called "Favorite Prescription. The puzzled attendant was unable to comply with her request and she left th? store disappointed. Inquiry elicted the fact that she had overheard a convcr satlon between two literary ladles ln which "Favorite Prescription" was men tioned with extravagant praise, and had jumped to the conclusion that It was a book. She now knows that Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription is a sovereign cure for the Ills and "weaknesses" peculiar to woman, for she has been cured by Its use. Send for a free pamphlet, or re mit 10 cents ln stamps for Book (168 pages) on "Woman and Her Diseases." Address World's Dispensary Medical As sociation, Buffalo, N. Y. Dear Sir: A special committee of bishops in he Laimbeth conference, deal ing with tihe subject of home reunion, prayed the conference to "recommend he matter to the prayers of all Christ ian people, both within and (so far as it may rightly do so) without, our com munion." The conference received the report with the aspiration: "May the spirit of love move on the troubled waters of our religious differences." In harmony with these suggestions an influenitial'ly signed appeal has been is sued in two successive years by the leading members of the Grlndelwald con ference. This appeal recommended that on WhR-Sunday, which falls on June 2nd tMa year, Christian ministers shouia de vote at least one sermon to calling at tention to the good work of some branch of the church other than their own, especially those branches whoej many ex celletncles are Obscured from the obser vation of their fellow Christians by the prejudice and suspicion engendered by centuries of strife. Among tWose who are supporting the recommendation of the Grlndelwald con ference to observe Whit-Sunday as a day of special prayer for Christian unity, are: The archbishop of Canterbury, thj arch bishop of Armagh, the archbishop of Dublin, Che bishop of Durham, the bishop of Exeter, the bishop of Landaff, the bishop of Lichfield, the blwhop of Manchester, the bishop of Peterborough, the blshor of Ripon, the bishop of St. David's, the bishop of Soder and Man, the bishop of Wakefield, the bishop ot Worcester; the moderator of the Church of Scotland, the moderator of the Free Church of Scotland, the moderator of the Presbyterian Church ot Englamd, the dhalrman of the Congregational Union, the president of the Baptist Union, the presidents of the five Methodist confer. encea, the president of the Free Church congress. I am glad to say that those distln gulshed Americoni ministers whose names I append, have agreed to support this recommendation ln the United States, and I trust that by the publlca tion of this letter you will help to s.cure the uniform observance of Whit-Sunday in this manner by all churches in the English speaking worid.
