At last the authorities have made an example of a man named Campbell who pleaded guilty to having cut in numerous places, the telegraph line between Till a. mook and Forest Grove. He 'was fined and costs, with a warning that a repe tition of the offense would send him to the pen.' The Tillamook line, which is of trreat value to Astoria, has been an ex. pensive piece of property sJ far, and II has been months at a time that no com. munlcatlon whatever was to be had be tween these points. The cannery interests of Tillamook and Nehalem, as well as steamers plying between this city ana those points, are controlled by Astoria parties, making the use of a telegrahp line- almost a necessity. A beautiful sight was presented to the fortunate passengers on the steamer Lur ilne Bunuay evening. It was Just at dusk, tne storm cloud, that had been black with rain all day, broke away and the new -moon wltn a few brlgnt stars ap peared Jn the rift as the boat rounded a point and. Brookfleld came in sight. The little hamlet at the head of the small cove, lying )partlytla..the. mountain side, surrounded by the new verdure of grass and trees which had taken on their bright est colors from tne recent rains; the spa cious and homelike residence of . Mr. Aleg le'r in the center pf the village, its green lawns, newly made gardens, and beauti ful trees, with, the darker green of the wooded hills above and a silvery stream running down from between the moun tains, made a picture well worthy of an artist's brush and one which the observer would not soon forget. The Columbia abounds with many such beauty spots and to a lover of nature the trip on Us broad waters never grows tiresome or monotonous. . RIVER THIEVES SURPRISED. , One of Them' Captured and the Oiher Escapes. Early yesterday morning, when the clouds were tosBlng and tumbling and the sky was black as pitch. Officer Seafcldt, while groping about the water front In the rain, captured a prize that Is likely to prove of value in more than one way probably be the means of breaking up the notorious gang of watef front thlevis that has infested this city for the past few years. Several days ago Chief of Police Lough cry received information from the Port land chief that several skiffs had been stolen from that city and directing that a sharp lookout be kept for them. Satur day a strange skiff was located under the old Parker dock, and from the time of Its discovery a constant watch was kept on the frail craft, for It was expect ed Its owner would call for It sooner or later. Saturday morning about 1 o'clock, Officer Seafeldt was on the watch, sit ting quietly in the old coaCh back of the warehouse, and drecly opposite the skiff. He had Just relieved Chief Loughery, who had been standing watch for a while, and had only settled back comfortably when he heard a noise under the dock, and slipping out In the darkness, peered over the edge of the dock. He had not long to wait, for shortly a boat's bow came out from under the dock, and in It was standing a man. Either a slight noise made by the officer, or a glimpse of his portly form, caused the man In the bow of the boat to Jump head foremost Into the water, where he was lost sight of, evidently swimming ashore under the dock and making his escape. The officer Instantly whipped out a revolver, and lying flat on.Jhe wharf commanded the remaining occupant of the boat, who had by this tlme.'.oppeared, sitting in the stern, to throw, up his hands. So surpris ed was the fallow, that he Jumped nip and went ovef backwards Into the boat, arising at once with both hands In the air but not until the officer had taken a shot at him. Ha was soon secured by the officer. Now when a watch was put on the skiff under the dock it was not expected that it would lead to the capture of a far more Important personage than an ordinary boat thief, but It did, for when the skiff out of which the prisoner was taken was examined, It was found to contain five bales of twine, marked El more, Sanborn Co. This was an Im portant haul, for the bales, which weigh ed 144 pounds each, were, it was after words ascertained, valued at $720. Word Was Immednaely sent to, Mr. Elmore, and upon his arrival en examination of the warehouse was made. It was found that 'he thieves entered at the north door by nrylng off the bottom cleats, and entering by awlnglng the door outward, unfasten ing the lock from the Inside. After this was accomplished the task of removing the bales of .twine was an eisy matter. Tt In thoucht.the fellow intendd to mak mother haul, after having stowed the Irst load away somewhere. At the station the prisoner gave the inme of Henry. Gllbertson, and claimed to have come, here on the sealing schooner Kate and Ann. He said he could not re member the name of the man who Jump d out of the. boat, as he had noly met him earlier In the evening, and did not inrllclnate In the roMwrv. etc. As soon as possible and Inventory was taken of the stock, but it Is not known as yet with what results.
