Foard and Stokes say that It Is a very commendable thing on the part of the vater works contractors In buying their supplies in the city instead of going abroad. Contractor Parelll has already bought several orders. Mr. Tee und bis assistants are getting well along with their work of levying delinquent taxes, and in the next day or two will practically complete the list. A great deal of property that was not levied on last year has received notices this year, though the total amount levied upon will not exceed the 1894 list. The new fertilizer works will be ready for operation by Tuesday next. The ma chinery 'has been set and all that remains to be done is to finish up a few connec tions and test the various machines. A small steamer will be used to convey the refuse from the various canneries, con tracts having been made with all but one of ithe canneries on the river. Mr. C. F. Swlgert, of Campbell & Swi- gent, Portland, who have the contract for furnishing and laying itho pipe for the distribution system, was In the city yes terday with his foreman, Mr. W. B: Mar tin. The gentlemen were looking over the ground relative to rtHielr part of the work and returned to Portland last night. Do not forget the excursion Sunday' to witness the burning of the steamer S. G, Reed. Some have thought that an Imi tation bout wits to be used, but the O, R. and N. Co., who own the Reed, guar antee that the steamer itself will ba towed down the river ami actually de stroyed in Imitation of a real steamboat dlsnster. We have all read for years of the hor rible burning of steamers on the Missis sippi river, but few have ever witnessed such a slifht. The O. R. and N. has placed Its fine steamer Queen at the service of the people of Astoria so that nil may have a chance to witness the blowing and burning up of the steamer S. O. Reed. As soon as the construction of the rail roud begins the West Shore Mills will be efnrted In operation, running full ca pacity. Judge A. R. Abercromble will as sume his old place as yard superintend ent. The mill has been closed for the run: two years, anl Its resumption of business will give employment to a lnrge num!T of men. Ten tim.-rs and the big barge At las will 1-nve Portland Sunday afternoon tnd g down the river carrying 10,000 peo ple to witness the burning of the steimer Red. The Atlas will be Illuminated by lit) Incuidescents and will have a band to furnish musli for dancing, as well the two steamers .towing her. The Queen will leave Astoria at 2 o'clock Sun day ufternoon aid when she meets the Portland fleet the entertainment will be given. It's a good thing for the citizens of Astoria to have a place In their midst like August Erlekson's, where they can fake a stranger friend and show him a saloon and billiard hall as fine as can be found In any 'town of twenty thousand Inhabitants. And then the bar! What elegant liquors there are there to be served to you. After a person once drinks the liquors from Erlekaon's bar they don't let old habits or persuasion load then elsewhere. For a moment yesterday morning. An drew Dalglty Imagined that he had either been sandbagged or shot. He wtis rid ing along the street near 13lh and Com mercial, on his bicycle, when suddenly a loud report caused the people near by to look quickly in his direction, and Just In time to see him Jump from his wheel and start hurriedly across the street. Mr. Dalglty soon discovered that the nolae was made by the explosion of one of the pneumatic tires of Ills wheel that left the nwchlne in a crippled condition. He took It to the bone yard for repairs. Mr. A. B. Carson. United States Na tional Hank examiner, was In the city yeisterday and went over the affairs of the local hanks. Mr. CUrson stated that matters of the buiks here were In most satisfactory condition, more so, relatively than In most cities of this site. He said that he thought Astoria was the most peculiar town on the coast because of Us separate resources, und that H seemed to be In an exceptional state of prosperity. Mr. Caraon left this morning for Seattle, where he will take charge of the defunct Merchants' National Bank of that place aa receiver. , Sjme Idea of the miarnttude of the work to be done on the now water works can be had when It Is known the build- in. of the reservoir a.one Involve, the j hauling of ,000 yards of dirt, a.000 of j Discovery In my store I Bent for a bot which will be wasted by being dumped tie, und began to use 1L and from th. iirto the gulch, while the balance will be used in the construction of emUank- tt ments. It will require more than sot. wagon alone to haul the brick for tne rvaervolr, while there ar W.Oi'O feet of lumber, CO ton of steel bands, and CO tons of couplings to be hauled up on the bill, besides COS wagon loads of wooden pipe and some 40,000 tons of steel pipe. More teams will be required than men. The engineers are working early and late to keep ahead of the contractors, The engine for pumping the water Into he temporary tank from the spring in the gulch is in working order and the pipe Is nearly all laid. Oapt. G. V. Parelll, who has taken the contract from Mr. Behm for the con struction of the ditches between the res ervoir and the headworks on the new water system, was subjected to rather an unpleasant experience last night. He was approached by several foreigners who asked for work, to whom he replied that they could have work if they were Amer ican citizens, and could go out to camp at once. Two of the men said they were citizens, upon which Mr. Parelll asked them for their papers. It developed that the men had no naturalization certifi cates and were not United States citizens. They were then Informed that none but American citizens were employed. They became very abusive, and Insulting, threatening violence, and it looked for a few moments as though there would be trouble, but Mr. Parelll, ignoring their Insults, was soon able to withdraw and make his way home. Mr. Parelll, who has large mining Interests in the Coeur d1 Alenes and Southern Oregon, says that while the most of the mines (silver) are closed down for the present, he haa for years employed large bodies of men and has always made it a rule to employ none, but American citizens, caring not what might be their nationality. He is himself a staunch Republican, and while not a politician, takes an active interest In the welfare of his adopted country. All who are of the right stamp will be given work by him as long as there Is work to do. A gentleman who heard of 'the difficulty remarked that If there were a few more such employers, mine own' era and manufacturers, this country would not have so much trouble with foreign laborers and strikes among min ers would not be so prevalent. The steamer Queen Is being treated to a coat of paint inside and out. Pilot Empkins took the American ship Alameda up to Porland yesterday after noon in tow of the Ocklahama. The steamer State of California will be down from Portlamd this morning and leaves out for San Francisco in the afternoon. The Mendell and Lincoln changed places yesterday, the latter taking the tow work and the Mendell sounding the channel at the mouth of the river. Word came from Portland yesterday that the ship Southesk had completed loading and would abut down the river for 'this city early next week. The Mayflower came oft the ways yes terday and, as was expeoted, complete ly knocked the novelty out of Cap tain Rehfeld's steam siren, by her bril liant appearance. One of the five new hands shipped In Portland for the Highland Home foiled to put in an appearance, and the vacancy was supplied in this cley yesterday af ternoon. The Highland Home carries a crew of 23 men. The Alice Blanchard came in from San Francisco and way ports yesterday morn ing with 80 tons of Coos Hay coal and twenty passengers for this city. After discharging her coal she left up the river for Portland. The British ship Hhland Home, loaded with 1S77 tons of wheat, came down the river from Portland yesterday In tow of 'the Emma. Hayward with Pilot Pease In charge. She will go to sea tomorrow, and Captain McWhlr expects to make a speedy passage home. The vessel Is bound for Falmouth or Queenstown for orders, and her cargo Is valued at $.0,000. Many of the deep-sea pllwts, and most of the waterfronlt people are awaiting with great Interest the result of the soundings now being made by the sur veying party aboard the steamer Mendell at the mouth of the river. It is believed that the figures will prove on increasing depth, particularly on the north side of the river, and a general deepening of the channels In that vielniily. Capt. McWhlr, of the Highland Home, was remembered yesterday by his large circle of friends In this city and he and his crew were well stocked with books and magazines and papers to while away tedious hours on the voyage to Europe. This custom of providing read ing matter gratuitously for the various outward bound ships is growing Into larger dimensions In this city every year, and there Is no way of disposing of those old papers that have a habit of accumu lating round the house, so meritoriously as by presenting them to the ships, whose crews find them a source of mental com fort so great that landsmen can hardly understand Its magnitude. It Is every day becoming more apparent on the water front that, at least during Jie fishing season In the spring and sum mer months, there should be a police patrol boat for use at night up and down the river in front of the city. While a few cases of net and boat stealing have been given publicity lately t Is known ihiat far more thefts in this line have .lappened than have been reported. I.J Ahere Is there nny disposition to lay blame on the police for these depredations and the suftercrcs themselves realize .hat, with the present size of the night iiitrol force In the city and the large amc.un: of ground that each man has to cover on his beat, It Is practically im possible for the water front to ltcelve anything like the adequate attention It s entitled to. Even supposing that a boa and net are stolen at the moment hen an officer happens to be at '.he particular dock from which they are .aken, he Is practically powerless to do inything. On a dark night when the ;hieves choose to leave his challenge un answered, he cannot stop them. He dares .tot use his revolver, for he cannot get. close enough to find out whether the men are the real owners of the boat or not. On the other hand, with two constables In a light skllt, they could run up along 4de any boat on the river and fully ex amine every suspect. This would not only put a damper on such depredations, but would also leave the patrolmen in the city free to devote far more attention to the safety of the business and resi dence portions. The cannerymen, it is believed, would gladly provide the boat and requisites If the city would furnish the men for this very necessary service.
