Mr. Willard remarked that he could not help but believe that there was a brlgm future in store for the mouth of the Columbia, and that there was room haie for several more mil lions of people. We have all read for years of the hor rible burning of steamers on the Missis sippi river, but few have ever witnessed such a sight. The O. R. and N. has placed Its fine steamer Queen at the service of the people of Astoria so that nil may have a chance to witness the blowing and burning up of the steamer 1 S. G. Reed. Tom Llnville has taken a novel way of spreading the gospel, and If his scheme had only proved a success, much good mitfht have come of It. He called the children of his neighborhood together yesterday and told them he would show them the way he used to fly a kite when a boy. Procuring the necessary frame work he covered it with a late edition of the War Cry and attaching a fancy tall, let 'er go. For awhile the kite sailed beautifully and each fresh gust of wind oaused It to go up a notch, so that finally the words "War Cry" were almost In. distinguishable. But an 111 wind struck the kite amidships, and snapping the hawser It sailed in a zig-zag direction towards the river and was soon lost sight of. Thomas did not wait to see where K landed, but made 'his escape before the youngsters congregated could call him down on his boasted experience at flying kltee. PERSONA h MENTION. B. W. Dr. Walker, who Tuesday afternoon went to Kmtppo. to attend Charles Spears, who was badly injured while working In the McFarland logging camp, brought the man back with him yester day morning and had him placed in St. Mary's hospital, where his injuries will be looked after. All of yesterday afternoon was occupied In Judge Osburn's court in the trial of the case against Jerry Sweeney for steal ing Seaborg's fishing not. Tuesday Chief Loughery arrested two men nameed Brown and Storms, who had the net In their possession. After reaching the city Brown declared that he had paid 1100 for the net and could Idemitify the man If he should see him. Officer Sea feldt was detailed to take the rroin around rown ana give him an opportunity to find his man. At a, down-town resort Brown picked out the man Sweeney, who wus taken In custody. At the trial yesterday it developed that Brown had actually paid J100 for the net. Brown swore that he bargained for the net on McAllister's scow some weeks before, and as he was going out fishing after dark one night Sweeney met him and delivered the net, for which he paid him the 100. McAllister, owner of the scow, swore that he did not hear any bargain made natrhlng said about a net. Grant, the saloon keeper, testified positively that Sweeney was behind Ills bar all of the nipfht on which lit Is claimed that the net Wis delivered, to Brown, and that Sweeney could not possibly have been a.nywhere else. Sweeney testified to the same thing, as did also Lorry Benson, but they knew nothing whatever of th" wnereaboults of Sweeney at any other lime. The circumstances ehowod that Sweeney wus guilty, but the positive evi dence exonerated liim. The case wns dis missed, ao there was no possible show to convict. Lawyer Curtis represent 1 the state and Judge Cleveland the de fense. Rev. J. J. Holkka leaves this morning for the East, via the O. R. and N. and Union Pacific. W. D. Pratt, of Salt Lake City, Is mak ing a visit in tlie city and is quartered at the Parker House. M. L. Paul Webb, who made the leap over the falls at Oregon City, were in Astoria yesterday Mr. Wills completed his arrangements for an excursion from Astoria Sunday to thj Upper Columbia, where the steamer Reed Is to be blown up with a display of red fire. M. H. Hall, of the renowned Butterlck Paittern Co., of New York, passed through the city yesterday, en route for South Bend. Mr. Hall Is a prominent college ball player, and with Mr. Benton, of San Francisco, frequently plays with the Multnomah club, of Portland, when they happen to be In thCs part of the country. T, H. Benton, of the Dunham, Oarrigan & Hayden Co., San Francisco, Is in the city. He has Just come from the Wil lamette Valley, and reports that business through that section looks better than It has for two years past. The fruit crop will be very large, and business men and farmers feel much encouraged. Business Is so Increasing that Mr. Benton's firm finds It expedlenlt to put on two more men.
