Oipitoln Reed returned yesterday from his piloting trip to Portland, The Alameda will not leave up the river before tomorrow morning. Three carloads of salmon were shipped east yesterday over the O. R. and N. Oo.'s lines. The Gaitzert took up two carloads. The captain of the Mectrlc took advan tage of an off day yesterday to .overhaul the steamer's stern bearings and clean up her boilers. All the steamers of the mosquito fleet seem to have caught the spring cleaning mania, and dealers In paint and putty are happy In consequence. After a stay of Beveral days In port the little Bctooner Franclne hove up anchor and went down the river. She will go outside this morning and try to do some fishing. One of the men employed on the pile drivers at the Jetty has signified his In tention of building a 21 foot boat to com pete In the sailing races ait the regatta In August. All the plungers started out from their respective canneries yesterday afternoon for the mouth of the river, but none of the boild buccaneers who captain them felt Inclined for a race. Yesterday the steamer Queen, after taking the Frlcke funeral cortege from John Day's to Greenwood, returned to Chat place with the mourners and made her Astoria dock at 4 o'clock. The Mayflower In her new dress will be the belle of the lower river when she comes off the ways this morning, and resumes her regular run. The Inspectors will probably be down today to examine her boilers. The run of fish yesterday slackened up perceptibly from the fine record of pre vious days, and the average dropped to 8 and 9 per boat. The size of the salmon continues satisfactory, and finer appear ing fish have never entered the river. Six carpenters are now working stead ily on tbe Eclipse. Her funnel was lifted out yesterday, and it -was decided to saw off her stern and lengthen it thre? feat, so that It will be extended on both ends. Joe Leathers calculates that It will be fully another month before he turns her over to her owners again, After the grand flare up on the river when the steamer Reed goes to Valhalla in a blaze of glory, It may be .well for some enterprising spirits to get in and collect several acres of crazy net racks, detach them from the city wharves, and after floating them in a heap to a con venient spot In midstream, give the pub lic of Astoria a chance to gaze on a good, old-fashioned bonfire. The R, R. Thompson is being rapidly repaired and overhauled at her ways up the river, and on the 16th of June she will resume her regular Astoria run. Reports Indicate that she will leave the hands of painters and decorators In mtost excellent condition and with her lately renovated sister, the stately Potter, will make a handsome and speedy team for the summer season's trafllc. Tre Fort Stevens Life Saving Crew are doing nowadays what is pnacttcally fa tigue duty, and deserve the thanks of the public for their untiring efforts to look out for the safety of many hundreds of Astoria fishermen. Every day at low water slack they pull down from the life saving station, and lay outside the last nets till flood tide. The work is nothing buAj a hard monotonous grind, and while it is good to think that they have not had much of it to do In the way of saving life up to this time sinca the season started, H may be well for them to know that their consant vigilance is appreciated very greatly by the people of this city. Seining operations on the river continue to bring in favorable results. On Oli ver's grounds above Tongue Point the seiners are averaging 3,000 pounds of fish per day, but this is an accumulation of fifteen hauls, the conditions for quick hauling In that locality being particu larly favorable. Spencer's outfit is doing well, and the sportive proprietor expects to improve his catch as the river gets clearer. George Kaboth Is turning In half a ton a day from two hauls, and all old hands at the seining business agree that the new grounds being fished by him are yielding better average returns than any new locations that bave yet been touched in the vicinity. The following orders have Just been Issued by the department: A new buoy Port Gamble shoal buoy, black can, No. 1, is shown on the chrarts 0 meters northeast east from the outer end of Sawmill wharf (the northernmost wharf), at Port Gamble, Wash. Pilot W. E. George has reported that the steamship Cilr of Topeks. touched upon an hitherto unknown sunken obstruction in mid- channel, north entrance to Wrangel Strait, Alaska, some two hours before low water on April 13, 1835. The obstruc tlonlt shown on the charts, pending sn examination of the locality, 00 meters northeast by east, K east, from Prolewy Rock Spindle. A special dispatch from Ullwaukee to the CMcago Times-Herald says: "Thus far this Is the poorest season for catch ing Dsn which those engaged in the busi ness in this city bare ever experienced. The catch by the Milwaukee fishermen has been gradually decreasing for a num ber of years, and &i year tee decrease from la rear' catch will amount to a. II r.M. C. A. Hlggins, who has been in the business for the lost 21 years, says It wCOl only be a question of a few years when the famous Milwaukee trout will be a thing of the pjst. There is hardly one whlteilsh caught in a week In the grounds aJjacent to this city, and where a few yeans ago 2,005 pourrds dally of white or trout would be caught In a 16-foot net. The total catch per week now of six tugs, each having out a mile and a quarter of netting, amounts in one week to 13,000 pounds of herring and 6,000 pounds of trout.
