It is a sign full of cheering Inferences for the future when the cannery men sf the Columbia River can get together and in a manner bath harmonious and bust' ness-tike, combine on a proposition fraugMt with so much Importance to themselves and the state as the careful Propagation of salmon. Such a meeting was held yesterday, and the Astorlan welcomes It as the first step toward many sucJi conferences and an ultimate combl nation of every, Interest connected with the Industry. When we come to consider what the oft threatened decadence of the salmon trade if It came to pass, would mean to the whole of Oregon, and particularly to this city, It is Indeed a good thing to nave the cannerymen prove by their acts theft they are determined to obviate sudh a commercial calamity, and to en sure the continuance of this grand In dustry by prompt and concerted action. Several of them have up to the present ume subscribed in cash towards the ee aansnment of a hatchery the sum of fftna thousand dollars, and it is believed that fifteen thousand dollars, the full amount required, will be raised very quickly. While many short-sighted peo ple whose main principle in life consists or the "grab and hold" theory, may be unwilMlng to add their contributions to make up the sum needed, It Is to be hoped (hat the majority of the subetan tlal citizens of Astoria and Portland will help in tho work and to a small extent relieve the coroners from bearing the whole expense of a proceeding that la as vital to the proseprtty of themselves and heir children as it is to the welfare or the packers. A glance at the names of the tncv. holders, which appears in another por- uon ox wis mornings paper, will be sufficient to show that the project will carried through in the manner best calculated to effect the object aimed at. and at yesterday's meeting it was the unanimous opinion that Immediate action was necessary. It was decided that the tmltdhery afrould be stationed on the upper waters of the Clackamas River, a decision which to those acquainted with he theory of fish propagation will be considered a most excellent one. As we have said before, the upper Clackamas is an Idoul stream for the purpose with everything In its favor, and a combina tion of advantages possessed nowhere else in the Northwest. Another wise con elusion arrived at was that the enter prise should be conduoted and operated sololy by the cannerymen themselves, and that It was fur better to control the work In this manner than to apicul to state or government for aid, and bo compelled alt the same tome to accept an Infinite amount of red tape and routine management, not strictly in accordance with business principles. "The Col u nUa River Packers' Salmon Propagating Company," as the new corporation is called, will run the hatchery with the sole vtow of speedily increasing the an nual run of salmon Into the river, and no expense or care Is to be spired to make the ImAltutlon a model of Its kind. The corporation has token steps to place Us officers In possession of all the facts that could possibly bo obtained from the largest hatcheries In the coun try, concerning the various steps taken by them to propagate fish ova, and this Information, added to the practical and valuable knowledge of many of the stock holders and (heir employes, will ensure the moat approved methods and the best res tats. There Is, then, every reason to bolleve Olralt In the course of the next few months this splendid Innovation will be In full working order. Such s sponta neous movement on the part of the can nerymen, not only proves conclusively that they are fur from being the short sighted and rapacious class that many though'Noss Individuals have considered them, but It means the solvation of sn Industry that, more than any oilier, hat given to Oregon both wealth and favor able notoriety. It means that succeeding generations will here at home be en sured the continuance of a lucrative call ing, and abroad the annual delight of enjoying the finest food fish that man has ever known. Well done, cannerymen. The ubiquitous bicycle cosKtlnuos to make friends and enemies. Among the luwrer class are evidently landlords In large cities. The Chicago Times-Herald of laxt Salturday says: "There is a littk questlon thwt landlords In certain of tht residence district In earn division of the city lv suffered somewhat in the mat ter of ren&wr for the present year. B mie surprise boa been manifested why hls should be so, and why houses that leave WctntViro been gladly taken at iVO or fctio a yar should now go begging for tira.Tj. In truth, this year has been r illed the tenant's year on that account, I This r'c.n Is mM altogether sufficient. Not only these, but clorks and employes of both, sexes Lave made the same discovery. To a person who can ride a wheel it matters little whether he lives three miles or ten miles from his place of business, nor does he care whatiher he Is near the "elevated" or the "cable," or the "steam cars." With Untie exertion he can ride t.t the rate of ten miles an hour, and thut will allow Jiim to live hi a very far cuburto Indeed. The result is that thla year people have been buying bicy cles and renting houses or securing places In tlio fur boundirles of the city. This Is the reason why landlords are still looking for tenants In some of the most definable residence districts of the city." Tiic Aetodan has for some weeks been in receipt of the Seattle Trade Register, a piper which typographically and in every other respect Is a credit to the city In which It is published. It Is cov ering the field of commercial news In thorough and impartial manner and a decided acquisition to the ranks of tradt? Journalism. A TRUE HERO Is the individual who smiles with oppar- ent cheerfulness during an attlack of rheumatism. "If such there be," we never met him nor her. An agonized grin Is the nearest approach to cheerfulness of aspect we ever beheld under uch clr cumstances. But when Hostetter's Stom ach Hitters has repelled as It certainly willthe earlier attacks of this formld able disease, the quondam sufferer has good reason not alone to smile, but to give vont to hearty guffaws Interspersed with frequent chuckles.
