Cann tender their selncere thanks to all of their kind friends who assisted and sympathized with them in their late bereavement. The telegraph, telephone and electric light wires throughout the city are hard on the kite flyers, as everywhere can be seen kites, strings and kite tails hanging to the wires. Nothing has been done up to date tow ards construction of the proposed thea tre, for which plans have been prepared for Mr. Fisher. It Is expected that work will be commenced on the building with In a few days. Mrs. James W. Hare last night gave to a number of her friends a very pleasant evening at cards. She also had 99 tons of freight for Astoria. Purser Bemlsh and Steward Lutter report a comfortable trip. Tourists from the steamer Oregon yes terday had a splendid opportunity to view Astoria nt her best. It wns an aver age busy day on the streets, and being a blight, warm afternoon, the passengers soon scattered over the city and took in the sights, the canneries being the prin cipal places of attraction for the visitors. In addition to their exhibition of elides tonight the Camera Club will present an Illustrated song. The latter feature has only once been produced in this city, when the rendition of "Ben Bolt" at Odd '''ellows' Hall a few weeks ago delighted lanre audience. Everv one whn pun possibly be present should endeavor to do so. Mr. Jenkins, formerly in the tinning ind plumbing business in Astoria, was In the city yesterday on business. He Is now leading the happy life of a furmer on the Necannlcum, and reports every thing In his neighborhood In a prosperous ondltlon. Mr. Jenkins has many friends In Astoria, who will be pleased to learn of his success as a rancher. Oft Pencock Spit at 6:4t yesterday morn ing, two more men were discovered cling ing to a capsized boat. The life saving crew hastened to their assistance, but on reaching the spot all trace of the men and boats was lost. The rescuers remained out four hours, but without success. The men were undoubtedly lost and no clew to their Identity has yet been found. It is hoped that the Seashore Railroad Company will put on Sunday trains to the, beach at an early date. Last Sunday quite a number of people in spite of the rain, were making inquiries at the hotel and docks regarding train service to th beach. There are many people here whe would like to go to the beaches on Sun. day and rest up after the week's toll. "Grandma Burnslde" wishes to most gratefully thank all the friends who so kindly rendered her 84th birthday one of the happiest of her long life. The beau tiful prayer and song of Evangelists Hol drldse and Dickson will ever be sweet in her memory until we meet In "Our Fath er's Home on High and gather round the great white throne bf eternal rejoicing some sweet day." By the prompt and heroic action of Dick Welcome another death by drowning was prevented early yesterday morning. It se?ms that A. V. Itoss, an employe ef M. J. Kinney, attempted to cross from ene scow to another at Sand Island, and losing his balance fell in to the water. A high sea was running at the time which made the undertaking a dangerous one. His partner, waterman, was equal to His partner, Welcome, was equal to the emergency, however, but had great diffi culty In fishing him out. Mr. Ross is not much the worse for his Involuntary bath. The postponed concert to be given by Prof. Thlelhorn In the First M. E. church on Monday, the 13th, Is sure to be an, Interesting event, and withal, a great musical treat. The best local talent In the city will participate with Prof. Thlel horn, and help make the affair a suc cess. The action of Prof. Thlelhorn In postponing his concert so as not to con flict with the revival meetings being held throughout the city, is deserving of more than ordinary commendation and should Insure the professor a large audi ence. Anyone who has ever heard the masterly rendition by Prof. Thlelhorn of the most difficult selections on the violin will know that next Monday night's concert Is - sure to be a great treat. Yesterday the subsidy committee re ceived the deeds of J. A. Devlin and C. B. Haradcn. The committee state that now all subsidy ' matters are practically cleaned up with the exception of the deed due from Ben Young. A gentleman in speaking of the matter though It was a great shame that such a stumbling block stands In the way of the consummation of Astoria's long-cherished scheme to put herself on a parity with the rest of the I world and it can hardly be credited that a gentleman of Mr. Young's Intelligence and business shrewdness will ultimately stand out against a proposition so manl festly to his own benefit as well as that of the community at large. Mr. Wlngate, of the right of way committee, did not get away yesterday, but will return to Ranler this morning, If nothing further prevents, to finish the work In that dis trict. It Is expected that when toe returns to Astora again, that as a result of his keen foresight, winning ways and great tact, he will bring back the balance of the right of way deeds In his "Inside pocket." Chairman Welch, of the Inside right of way committee, yesterday re ceived the deeds of the Adairs et. al., and the Masonic Loan and Building As sociation. Last night another very large congre gation listened to Evangelists Holdrldge and Dickson. The song service was thor oughly Inspiring and was participated In very heartily by the audience. Mr. Holdrldge opened his part of the service by having the congregation repeat with Mm the 23d psalm, upon which he made some very appropriate comments. Be fore commencing his discourse the evan gelist requested all who have not been ac. customed to listen to sermons to pre pare themselves to be good listeners. He then read from Matt. 7, ."Enter ye Into the straight gate, etc." From this scrip ture the Evangelist drew the thought that every man must make a trip wheth er he will or no. There are only two roads and the termini are heaven and hell. Upon the two courses of life, the evangelist spoke some very plain and practical rules, and showed In an earnest manner and by clear and logical reason ing that the only safe and sure course Is the "narrow way" which he enforced by the word of Jesus. "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." In conclusion the evangelist very earnestly appealed to all tho-young men of the audience to flee from all the sinful ways of life by coming to and accepting Jesus. K. was repaired at the Astoria Iron Works yesterday": Louis Martin is repairing one of Kin ney's seining ekl'ds for Barney Galla gher. . . . Last night the Sarah Dixon made her usual run up the river with a large number of passengers. According to the telegraph raports from the mouth of the river yesterday ...e water moderated considerably during the day. The Oregon came In at 2:30 yesterday afternoon with a very large passenger list, and a light cargo of miscellaneous freight for this city and Portland. She proceeded up the river before dark. The Leslie, a little 23 ton schooner built last year at Yaqulna Bay, came down the river from Portland yesterday and went out late in the afternoon. She is bound for Sitka, Alaska, on a trading cruise, and carries six hands besides the master, Captain Ross. The sealing schooner Kate and Ann will leave Out this morning. She cleared last rllght. well fitted out for her sea otter cruise, which will last till late In the year. The sealskins discharged from the little Vessel when she came into pert will be shipped to London via New York Tomorrow. i Barge No. 4 of the engineering depart ment knocked her stern off down at the Jetty on Wednesday and yesterday was taken into the slip at the back of the Dalglty Iron Works for repairs. A new stern will be built on her, and several other repairs attended to at the same time, as the craft is In a generally shaky condition; 1 Yesterday afternoon the Astoria Pack ing Company started to put up the first cval cans that have been filled by that company this season. The packing is be ing done at the new cannery. Work Is also proceeding at Devlin's, but on Mon day the latter place will be shut down and all hands will again be at work on the site of last year's fire. Although the Ida Haezl may not be as big sun the Campania, she Is "large for her size," and can take a good tow with the rest of the mosquito fleet without having to look for a back seat. Yesterday she came down from Hanthorn's cannery almost hidden from sight by can crates, and towing at a good speed a fishboat and a scow with a house on it. It is rumored that negotiations are be ing entered into for a big race finish at the coming regatta between the Oregon, the palatial O. K., and Clinton's pile driver. The start will be made next Monday from the Buoy depot and every. effort will be made by the captains of these ocean greyhounds to fcet to the winning post off Flavel's dock during one of the regatta days. The R. Mller took a funeral party round to Greenwood cemetery yesterday, the Electric taking her place on the Westport run. The Mller will be laid oft today for a week and will go on the beach for repairs. Her shaft couplings are loose and it is not considered safe to run her in her present condition. The Electric will stay on the Westport run until the Mller Is repaired. t The pilot schooner San Jose came in .ast night and was tied up .t the Union Pacific dock. Before going out to-sea .itraln she will receive a general over- nauling, and every part of her rigging and hull will be examined and repaired. During the severe gales of last winter the San Jose was strained In two or three places, and no doubt she needs a careful examination. ' The Masters' and Pilots' Association is still looking for ward to the time when she can be laid off forever, and another and more mod ern vessel put at the work. The scow that broke loo from her moorings on Monday night and drifted away at the mercy of the waters like a second Noah's Ark, rilnus the animals, all three of whom had vacated It In an open boat. Is still stuck high and dry on Ararat. Ararat In the present In stance is Tlmmlns' clearing, and the tern of tho scow Is Jammed Into the side of a goodslzed barn, defying any body short of a professional housemover to get It back to Its natural element How It passed through the network of traps In that vicinity and sailed op on the high tide among the trees and other vegetation without accident Is still a mys tery. Men were looking at It an day yes terday and It is probable that with the help of Jack screws and rollers it will be launched this morning. Yesterday afternoon the Gatzert was picking up a line at Lelnenweber's old dock in Uppertown, when the rope twist ed around the Wheel anct got caught. W. M. Drlscoll, one of the deck hands, start ed to try and disengage It, when the wind and tide together drifted the steam er Into the dock. She came with con siderable force against the limbers, which shattered a portion of the wheel box, smashed the cam yoke of the eccentric rod belonging to the starboard engine, and crushed Drlscoll up against, the side of the steamer. Fortunately he fell against the splintering beams and did not catch the full force of the' blow, which struck him on the breast bone, bruising the flesh considerably. As soon as the Gatzert reached the wharf Drlscoll was taken to the hospital and examined by Dr. Fulton, who ascertained that no bones were broken. The patient Is now resting easily and will be fully recovered In a week. The cam yoke was hauled down to the Astoria Iron Works and by hard work was placed aboard the steam er again In time to allow her to start on her trip up the river within a few min utes of her usual hour.
